WASHINGTON -- Six children were shot Monday evening at the National Zoo, authorities said.

One child was in "very grave" condition, said Capt. Brian Lee, spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

The captain said the other 5 shooting victims were expected to survive; two suffered only minor injuries.

Lee said two other people were also transported to the hospital. One had suffered a seizure and the other was a pregnant woman who reportedly went into labor during the incident.

The shootings took place in the late afternoon at the main entrance to the zoo on Connecticut Avenue.

One witness said the shootings came during a dispute between two groups of teen-agers. Another witness says someone threw a bottle and that a piece of glass bounced off her face -- after which the shots rang out.

ALL SIX CHILDREN were taken to local hospitals. One of them was in “very grave” condition, said Capt. Brian Lee, spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

A WRC-TV reporter at the scene said that a 12-year-old boy was shot in the head, a 12-year-old girl was shot in the back, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the ankle and another teen was shot in the calf.

Two adults were also taken to a hospital, one who was pregnant and one who appeared to have suffered a seizure. Lee said they were not directly involved in the incident, but suggested they may have have been affected by the trauma of the situation.

The shootings occurred at the entrance to the zoo on Connecticut Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in northwest Washington. An hour later, police were still trying to evacuate the zoo, which was full of families picnicking on its lawns, marking African-American Family Celebration Day.

Lee declined to speculate about how the shootings occurred, saying police were still talking to witnesses.

One woman who spoke to WRC-TV reporter Wendy Reiger said she saw two groups of teens, perhaps as many as 40, fighting. The unidentified woman said she heard at least seven gunshots, but could not see exactly who was shooting.

Another witness, 19-year-old Michael Hatcher, also told Reiger he saw teens fighting.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as developments warrant.

Yikes! Thanks for the information. I almost never visit the Legal and Political forum, so I didn't know.

Why do they target the children?

What's the underlying motivation in this?

I think I know the answer. Anybody else have an opinion on this?

I would have bet my house that another shooting would take place. I think somebody on another thread (TFL) last week said that we were due for another "shooting". Is my mind crazy or is it true that since that S.O.B. took office, there seems to be 100 times more of these type shootings?????

From my cold dead hands.

Not to mention the fact taht Al Gore went and told his demo-fund-raisers that this obviously necessitated "mandatory child locks"

Huh?

Uhhh....

Am I missing the connection?

Lame.

I guess we're up to 14 children a day, according to the HCI tactic of including teenage gang member shootings along with those of 6 year old kids.

Who is "they"? This is a case of gang members shooting gang members
[/quote]

They is the thugs in our society who don't give a damn about life, and most of them probably have a damn good idea that threatening your young is the one thing that will chill you out.

And if I recall reading the noose-caster report, there were no "gang members" injured... Isn't that odd!!

I mean, they hurl how many bullets at at each other, and none of them are injured, or killed.
Again, doesn't that sound a little strange?
The only ones injured are bystanders to this gang fight!!

Best Regards,
Don
