6.5x55 Swed re-barrel ?

I've got an m-96/38 Swed (Carl Gustav 1921) that has been somewhat sportorised. However, I am considering re barreling the action with a match grade barrel in 6.5x55 swed. I know that the .264 bullets have a very high BC and excellent accuracy and it isn't bruising to shoot many rounds at a match. Anyone have any thoughts on re-barreling in 6.5x55 or perhaps a different calibre that the receiver and bolt would work as a target rifle?

Different caliber ???? The 6.5x55 makes an excellent target rifle and it's been called the ideal deer cartridge.

Since it's a small ring mauser, I wouldn't go for anything higher pressure (though the Swedes tend to have really good steel).

6.5mm is a nice diameter for matches.

I don't know what you are looking for in a match grade barrel, but I suggest shooting the rifle first if you have not done so. Some of those regular barrels shoot up with most match grade barrels, and the 6.5x55 139 grain BT bullets are extremely accurate.

As for rebarrelling, it is a standard small ring Mauser and you should have no problem getting a barrel installed. I can't think of anything you could use in a pre-98 Mauser that would be any better than the 6.5x55 for accuracy or practical hunting.

Another possible cliber--6PPC????

I have seen recently the trend toward short FAT cartriges ie. 243wssm, 6PPC, 270wssm, etc and I've heard that they are pretty "Hot" but they don"t KICK which suggests- not super-hi preasure???? As I dont know anything about SSMs I can'make a judgement if they would work????. One thing that I was thinking was to get rid of the m-96/38 and go to a T C Encore rifle with an "accuracy barrel" from E Arthur Brown in what ever caliber, good for target and accuracy hunting.???

The 94,, 95,, 96 Mauser actions are not the best choice for custom work. The 6.5 Swede is a remarkable caliber and most Swedes I have owned shot very well with the stock barrels. Just a great little gun.
