With the advent of the new .300 Winchester Short Magnum, I'm sure someone is bound to neck it down to 6mm, .25, 6.5, and 7mm and call it something stupid...

I'm thinking about 6.5mm. Anyone good at cartridge design?
Would this be an effecient bore/case volume combination? Can you work up any theoretical loads? Or would this basically be the same as the .264 Win Mag and not worth the trouble? Do we need another 6.5mm?

I'd like to see a tactical rifle utilizing the new Winchester Short Magnum rifle in stainless-- finished in a dark bead blast like the Stainless Ruger Target Rifles in the same tactical stock the FN police rifle wears.

Any speculation on velocity/energy figures, critiques, or support for the idea appreciated...

With the newer slow powder numbers from Hodgdon, VihtaVuori Oy, and Reloder, it's probably not a whole lot different velocity wise than the current 6.5-300 Winchester Magnum, or even the 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum (Which I'm building right now, call me a sucker for short barrel life)

Seems to be a good following for the 6.5 STW in some long range circles, too.

As for efficient, the 6.5-300 WSM is probably still pretty much overbore, even my favorite, the 6.5-06, is considered by some to be overbore. If you pay attention to the benchrest gang, the 6.5-284 is doing wonderfully, I understand the Marines are even evaluating and using it for match purposes. A nice, efficient case design, and a beautifully clean bullet with great BC can do some neat things that normally require big magnum .30 caliber rounds to accomplish...
