6.5 creedmoor build

Starting my first custom build. After doing months of research I have decide to go with the 6.5 creedmoor. I will being using this rifle in F class competition. I don't consider my self just a "bench shooter"... I enter the competition mainly for the trigger time. I also want to be able to use this rifle for coyote/deer hunting.

So my question is what would be the correct length of barrel to run, so that this build will be effective in both scenarios?(F Class/Hunting)... I have zero experience with the 6.5C so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Using the rifle for dual purpose...
What kind of hunting? Stationary in a blind/stand or spot and stalk?
Weight is not much of a concern if stationary hunting. If walking through the woods, up and down hills/mountains, weight is a big concern.

I would go with a varmint/medium contour fluted barrel around 22", if spot and stalk hunting.
Bull/heavy fluted barrel around 26" if stationary hunting.
I would steer clear of a light/slim profile barrel as it will heat up quicker and hinder accuracy in fclass.
These are just my opinions...

People have been shooting light/slim profile barrels in competition for decades. Properly fit to the receiver, it never mattered how hot they got. Such is the standard for M14's and M1A's that won matches and set records doing it. And many of those barrels are just as stiff as longer, thicker heavier ones.

Fluting a barrel does nothing for its accuracy, but it does a few more dollars in the maker's bank account; the only good thing about them. In fact, most barrels fluted shoot with less accuracy after fluting. I don't think it's worth the expense and chance the barrel's accuracy level will go south.

A standard weight, 24 inch barrel is probably a good compromise, weight wise.

Its not so much the weight Im concerned with. As I well be going with either a #5 or #7 barrel. In my experience the over all length of the rifle is what makes it annoying to be caring out in the field. Hauling around a 300 win 26" thin profile barrel is more of a pain, as opposed to hauling a 20" #5 barrel in a 308. So I guess what I should be asking is how short of a barrel can I get away with, before I compromise velocity and take away from the 6.5Cs effectiveness?

Ok, got it.

A shorter barrel won't affect the inherent accuracy of the cartridge. But it will affect velocity, but not by much. I would say the difference in velocity between 24" and 20" is 200fps or less.

I ran some quick calculations using Hornady's ballistic calculator. Looked up on Hodgdon's site for 6.5 Creed loads. Their test rifle had 24" barrel and gave an average of 2,650fps on a max charge across powders.

Barrel Length 24" 22" 20 "
Velocity 2650 2550 2450
Drop at range
100 yds +2 +2.3 +2.5
200 yds 0 0 0
300 yds -8.3 -9.1 -9.9
400 yds -23.8 -25.9 -28.3
500 yds -47.3 -51.5 -56.3
600 yds -80 -87.1 -95.3
700 yds -123.2 -134.3 -146.9
800 yds -178.5 -194.6 -213
900 yds -247.5 -270.1 -295.7
1000 yds -332.5 -362.9 -397.4

You would just need a scope with enough internal adjustment and reliable tracking to make your elevation corrections at range.

Got it! I'm going with a higher end vortex, and a 20 moa rail on my stiller action. I have been using my Mrk 12 mod 0 ar 15 with a vortex and it works great.
Thanx for the help!!

I too use vortex on my target rifles and have not been disappointed yet.
Right now my go-to target rifle is a .308 with 18" heavy barrel, 5R rifling, with a JP Tactical Comp and Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 scope. Farthest I shoot right now is only 500yds so the regular viper works great for me.

I haven't had a chance to use the higher-end Viper PST and Razor's but have heard good things about them.

This is the first vortex pts I have ever used and it works great. I just need to go with a scope with a bit more magnification for this plat form. I went w a 2.5-10x42, when I built this Mrk 12 I went w a scope that would allow me to go close quarters as well. Can't help but hear the chuckles at the f class comp based on the fact that I'm the only one running a 556 on a semi auto plat form. I just don't believe in spending top dollar on a plat form only to be used as a straight bench shooter. So the only solution I see is to build something that will wrk at f class and real world situations.
