6.5-06

Is it possible to take a 30-06 action and build a rifle in 6.5-06? Just curious (Gewehr98, your rifle has kinda caught my eye).
Assuming one could be built on that action, how much expense is there for a new barrel, stock, and dies?

The cartridge is the same length as the .30-06, so that's not a problem. There's more money involved than just the barrel, stock, and dies, though. Depending on which action you're using, the stock should be easy, and getting a good 6.5 bore barrel blank isn't really that hard, Brownell's has them listed, I think they offer Shilen and Douglas blanks. Krieger, when I got mine, had a bit of a wait. If you're gonna chamber just one barrel, you'll need at least a finish reamer, unless you know of a smithy who has a roughing and finish reamer in good condition. Then you get to pay the man to assemble, ream, and headspace the whole thing. Dies aren't too bad, I'd recommend the Reddings, though RCBS also makes them. Load data is finally coming out in the printed data books, to include Nosler, Sierra, and Accurate Arms. Brass can be .25-06, .270, .280, 7x64, or .30-06, with varying degrees of work to convert. Bullet choices are pretty good, from varminting to the heavyweight target boattails. What action were you thinking of, I have a 1-8" twist spare barrel in a lightweight contour threaded for a 98 Mauser action...

The action is a Winchester Featherweight. Right now this is in the "planning" phase, funds are the big obstacle.

Midway has barrels already threaded for the 98 Mauser. They are rough reamed, plus they have the finishing reamers for sale also. I am not certain if they have the barrels chambered for the 6.5-06 though and I do not have the catalog in front of me to check it out.

It's an easy conversion. You may want to have a gunsmith do it as most barrels offered in catalogs are "short" chambered and have to be finished reamed. That's not a big problem for most gunsmiths. We do a rebarrel on Winchesters all the time, and have done quite a few of the 6.5-06 with great success. Dies and loading data are not a big problem, check with RCBS.

Well, there you go, fed168! And thanks, MontanaDan, checking out your website, I now know of a place I can send my Siamese Mauser action for a .45-70 barreling job, as well as my .45-70 Rolling Block Creedmoor project, heehee!

I had a 6.5 x 06 built on a 700 action a few years back as a 1000yd benchrest target rifle. Kreiger 1-8" barrel, jewel trigger, McMillian benchrest stock. I will sell it for $1000 with RCBS dies if you want a good to go long range rifle.

If you are detrmined to build on a Model 70 sporter the downside to the 6.5x06 is that it is a wildcat and your may have to special order dies. I got mine from RCBS's custom shop. If I was building a sporter for hunting I would go with 260 remington as it is available in factory ammo. They have also sold Winchester M70 in 6.5 Swede.

Other downsides to 6.5x06 is that you will have to neck down some other brass. I use 270 brass and find that the necks get very thick and must be turned down.
