I carry a Colt Detective special,as well as a Ruger SP-101. The Colt is late 70's manufacture, but I got it new inbox sometime back. My question is I know on the Colt SA revolvers it was standard practice to carry 5 rounds because of possible accidental discharge due to a drop, severe blow etc..I was wondering if this applied to the later double action guns as well. I have always carried just 5 rounds in my double action,Pythons etc..just for safety sake, but is this necessary,or is it perfectly safe to carry with 6 rounds..Thanks....PJ :)

Hello. It is perfectly safe to carry a full cylinder on a modern double-action revolver like your DS or Python. They have an internal safety block that prevents the firing pin from touching the cartridge's primer until the trigger's pulled. You are right to load only 5 with an empty chamber under the old Colt SAA and such. Note that the modern Rugers have internal safeties as well and they can be carried safely with a fully loaded cylinder just like the da revolvers. Best.
