5mm rimfire ammo source

Neighbor of mine has an old 5mm rimfire but only has a few dozens cartridges left for it. Anyone heard of this caliber and maybe a source of ammo for it. I'll get more specific info from him regarding make and model if we can get close.

Gunshows, if you're lucky.

Last two boxes I saw were $75 per!

There is a company out on the west coast that does conversions to 5mm centerfire. Can't remember the name, though.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Sell the ammo and use the rifle as a door stop. Take the money made from selling the ammo and put it towards a good .22 Magnum.

You can't even replace the 5mm barrel with a .22 barrel because the case head of the 5mm doesn't match any existing rimfire. So you would need to replace the bolt too. The rifle isn't worth that kind of expenditure.

Converting to a 5mm centerfire wildcat isn't worth the bother unless your neighbor is a handloader and has a ready supply of 5mm bullets (not a common item at most gunshops).

Remington should produce some runs of this ammo just out of consideration of the people who still have these rifles. Failing that they might consider taking them in trade on new rifles just to make up for the idiocy of trying to compete with the .22s.

Thank you folks!
He has tried the gunshows and found the same price - $75/box!
FAL308 - I couldn't get into the Scrounger's search this morning either.

Yes, Remington should do a production run because this 5mm rimfire is stranded/orphaned. My neighbor does handload but he's not so ambitious as to try to convert it to a 5mm wildcat centerfire.

Thanks again!

OWS sounds like a bargain at $52.95 plus shipping compared to $75.00 each at the shows. Still, you are faced with a rimfire that is costing you $1.00 per shot and no capacity to reload.

My neighbor with the 5mm rimfire tells me that he has heard at gunshows that Winchester (not Remington) runs a batch of the ammo when the price per box gets up over $150 per box. The price then drops to $20 per box for a short while until supplies get short again.
