Been having lots of trouble with my Remington 597. Posted this fact some time ago. Sundog came to the rescue with some very sage advise. Figured out how to stip the things, gave it a good cleaning, lubed it with Breakfree, cleaned the mags polished the hammer sear etc. So far it has gone almost 300 rds with out any stoppages, for this rifle thats incredible, before it was 2 or 3 stoppages every 8 - 10 rounds. And while the trigger pull is still heavy it breaks cleanly without any creep.
As a "maybe", you might consider, first, getting two brand new trigger springs. Then, shorten the existing spring a bit at a time until you're happier with the pull. If you goof, you have a spare. You can then try again, being more patient--and still having a spare.
