5926 vs. 226

So today I got to take my new-to-me 5926 and my old-to-me 226 to the range for a little informal comparison. It was an interesting match up. Both have frame mounted decockers, both have 15 round mags available, the 226 has a slightly longer barrel but weighs slightly less (0.3 pounds) as the Smith is all steel while the 226 has an alloy frame. Ammo was Winchester white box. Had to shoot the 5926 first as it was the new pistol. 200 rounds no jams. Accuracy was good, better than I remember with the 5906 I used to have. Result, I am very happy with this acquisition. Next I shot the 226, 200 rounds no jams but the slide typically failed to lock back. Just haven’t got around to ordering new mag springs. Side by side comparison, accuracy was limited by my skill so Ransom results would probably yield more telling results but there really was no difference. The fit on the 226 was better. Recoil seemed less with the Smith. The trigger on the Smith was better. DA was shorter and lighter then the 226. SA on both were comparable. The SA take up on the Smith was that old Smith auto gritty feel, but it is take up so it doesn’t really effect performance. I found that my 5926 is a hell of a pistol and it is a shame that Smith stopped making it and the other frame decockers (especially the 10mms :D). Guess I'll have to find a 4026 and a 6926 now.

The slide not locking back with a P226 is often the result of a high grip that holds the slide release down (by thumb). Could this be your problem, too?

I would prefer the Sig P226, hands down, cuz there is
just something special about quality made German
firearm's.:D :)
