58 Remy question

I believe it is pressed and possibly soldered. It is not screwed. I grabbed the base of it with some pliers and turned until it broke free.

Here is my article on replacing the Pietta 1858 front sight with a dovetail:

If I had to do it over again I would probably just twist out the old post, then solder in a post of brass, and then file the post into a blade, biasing it to the left or right as needed to get the desired point of aim.

Steve,
I saw your post before and it was very good. I was thinking of shortening the barrel on one of my Remington's and the brass post was what I had in mind. I did a 51 Colt clone and just reused the brass barleycorn front sight. That one worked okay for me.

Fortunately these replicas are kind of soft and easy to work with.
When the front sight on mine broke off, what was left still in the barrel was drilled out slightly over sized, and the sight was replaced with a threaded something or other from my junk box.
Shaped suitable for use as a sight, of course.
The barrel was tapped accordingly and now the front sight is of the threaded type and easily removable if need be.
And it was free and quick.
