'58 question

To answer your question simply ,yes, but deer can be taken with a 22lr also, is it ethical? NO, i used a 44mag taurus with a scope loaded to the max last year and killed a doe at 40yards, i will not shoot at a deer past 50yards [with a handgun], the loads you can put in a remmie 1858 or 45long colt are not even close to a modern smokeless revolver, save your remmie for small game and target shooting, just my opinion, pghrich

A .44 cap and ball revolver is about in the same power class as a .38 special. You really want more for deer.
I'm not saying that no one's ever killed a deer with one, just that it's kind of marginal.

Also, it take a lot of practice to get good enough to put a pistol bullet in a deer's vital zone at 25-50 yards, even more than archery does in my opinion.

To be totally honest,a well placed arrow with a good sharp broadhead is definitely more lethal than a 44caliber cap and ball 1858 on deer, pghrich

+ 1 On something with a little more power than the 1858 class for deer. You may could try a .50 cal single shot may work at up to 50 yrds. Have a backup plan till you see how well it works out. I might try using my Walker at 50 yrds. Just saying.
