50GI vs 10mm vs .45 vs 454 casull Balistic Testing with Pics

Had some extra time on my hands yesterday so i took a few hrs at the range to do some of my own Balistic comparison testing using 3 sets of wet soapy phone books submerged for 1hr measuring a total of 17inches per stack..And below i have posted some pics of the depth results and expansions...My velocities might not be accurate since my guns are not full length in size so you might wanna average a few hundred fps less than what is listed below..All tests were shot from a distance of 17ft...I will list from best to worst..From my tests the best expansion was the 50GI SCHP which measured 1.05" Shot from Glock21SF .50GI conversion 4.6" Barrel...2nd place 454 Casull Barnes X HP,expanded .65" ,Shot from Ruger Alaskan 2" Snub...3rd place 10mm Federal HydraShock expanded .63" Shot from Glock29 3.7" barrel.... 4th place The Gold Dot and Magtech .45 both expanded at .50" Shot from Glock21sf 4.6" Barrel... 5th place The Winchester SXT expanded at .48" Shot from Glock21SF 4.6" Barrel...and the Aguila had no Expansion when shot from Glock21SF 4.6" Barrel..The Aguila bullet is a fragmenting bullet that is suppose to fragment into 3 pieces when impacting soft tissue...In this case nothing happened so i gave it last place...As for penetration I have it listed below with the pics..The penetration results i tried to take exact measurements since it was hard to do this with a measuring tape using phone books..The Best penetration so far that i have seen from my guns is the .454casull penetrating at a whopping 15"......Hope you guys enjoy the pics and feel free to comment.

WOW! That .50 cal bullet expansion is impressive! I tried to find it online (Guncrafters Industries) to see if they make any other loads, but came up empty handed. Do you know who actually makes the bullet?
 
Yes they make the solid copper hollow point...you have to call in to there warehouse and they will ship it direct to you...For some reason they dont have it listed on there website as of yet...Being a huge 10mm fan..The 50gi has deffinately made this gun an optional conceal carry...
 
The numbers for the second 10mm are way off. 180gr at 1030 fps is about 425 ft-lbs.

A decent .40 defense round tops that. I'd be curious to see what a 200gr at 1300 fps would do penetration-wise.

That .50 GI expansion is very impressive. I've only seen those heavy but incredibly slow loadings (250 and 300 gr at 900 or 800 fps; 9mm level energy). 600 ft-lbs with a bullet that big is a great combo.

As would I, seeing as how my favorite 10mm load is 200 gr at ~1250. That 50GI is a great cartridge; the more I see of it, the more I like it.

I've been bugging Alex to put the SCHP bullets on his website now for a while, he always acknowledges that he should but, "can't find the time". Perhaps I'll get it through to him this weekend (Columbius Day) when I finally go to meet him in person. Yup. You herd right, I'm going to GI in person to see his shop and meet Alex Zimmermann! Been readin about GI for years and bought a Model 2/ hard chrome from him bout 20 weeks ago, so needless to say... I'm pumped! I posted about going in another forum (50GI.com) but figured I could do it here as well...
Does anybody have any particular questions they want to ask GI?
Or- does anybody have any requests they like to ask?
Or-just simply does anyone have a comment they'd like me to pass on to him?
 
Yeah,...Im jealous....:o Have a great time... Ive already given Alex the link to this thread...He is glad that the civilian testing been added for the public to see and be the judge for themselves...
 
i dont see how its a Vs. or comparison of calibers. usually that would entail shooting the same brand of ammo thru each gun, thus determining which is best.

this is more of a "heres some bullets i shot from these guns, and this is what they did" thread.
 
I would have done that if they made the same bullet for every gun..This test is not professionaly done but gives the public an idea of the brand of ammo used and its expansions with various calibers...
 
You gotta love glock pistols..This mag can be manipulated to hold 17+1 50gi rounds or 30rounds of 45acp.. :D

You gotta be kidden me! That's amazing! That's an arsenal! Where did you get that? You should post info on that 50GI.com. People there would love that! That mag, more than doubles the capacity!!!
 
How does this prove the superiority of the 50GI? Would that same solid copper HP expand like that in a 10mm? Maybe not quite as large diameter, but shouldn't this thread be more about bullet design? BTW impressive expansion!

Yes the bullet would expand like that in 10mm/.45/9 whatever. It's a great design! The point is still that none would expand to 1.0+ (and that IS a big hole) let's not argu that. Please. Give credit where credit is due. Having a 1" hole is quite a nice benchmark for a hollow point to achieve. No?

And second. ONLY GI sells and makes those bullets. Alex Zimmerman designed them from the ground up. (again give credit where credit is due)
 
The mag is very practical when you go on long trips cross country...If you think about it..having 18 rounds of 50cal bullets could be a god send if you ever get into a gun fight ....I Had a few other guys tell me it looked Like something a Mall Ninja or a Valley bitch would use..but of course i was dealing with a bunch of old farts that were very old fashioned to your 6round revolver..People like that have no intensions of opening up to newer practical things..So i rather not argue and just let them state there opinions..As for the bullet comparison..the closest thing i could find to the 50gi cartridge was the Barnes X bullet...As you can see above i tested it in my 454casull and it was very impressive in expansion and penetration depths.But it does not expand over an inch and it opens up to 6 petals versus 4 large ones as the 50gi does...But i am curious to see the expansion results in the 500S&W using the Barnes X Bullet..Since it is a 50cal ..it could possibly open up to an inch..but only testing will tell for sure..
