50bmg

Dave,

Welcome to TFL. I'm sure you will get alot of feedback.

Let me start. :)

Looking at your site it looks that the Ferret has a different buttstock then a conventional AR. Will the Ferret upper work with the "stock" buttstock?

What kind of accuracy can one expect from the rifle? (asking this knowing full well that the shooter plays the most important part)

Thats all I have for the moment.

Again, welcome aboard TFL.

Very Cool Muzzle brake!

What kind of muzzle velocities do you get from a 18" barrel?

How much do you charge for one?

It seems that since it is a conversion that is done to an AR15, it is not a firearm in itself. To me, that means less ATF hassles. It looks like it is not a permanent conversion either. I think I saw something similar somewhere a while ago but it looked less bulky.

Thanks everyone.

It will work with a stock lower. That lower is one I threw together with stuff I had laying around, the buttstock slipped over the buffer tube.

To use an off the shelf lower, remove the bolt stop, the buffer and buffer spring. Mount the upper.

Recoil. At 23 lb, the recoil is less than a 12g, without the snap.
I am working on an improved design for the brake.

Accuracy. Long ranges are hard to find in Florida. I have tested out to 220yd, and had .5 MOA. I will be yesting the new brake and a DPMS single shot lower in a week or so. I plan to go to Manatee gun range. The range goes out to 600YD, i think. Ill let you know how it goes.

Scope. First let me say to only use the best rings you can find. I am using Badger Max50. Second, dont use variable power scopes on a 50, unless they are made for it. I am using a BAS 24x50, I think. That is about as cheap as it gets. So ues what you would like. There are some new affordable scopes out for 50s now, and some to come out soon.

Anyhow, thanks for the complements.

preservefreedom, the one you might be thinking of is th Watson's weapons .50 BMG that attaches to an AR lower. It may be less bulky, but you need to take a cordless drill to the range to close the chamber.

Ferret, that is a nice gun. can it be mounted on similar lowers? Like an AR-10?

I am not sure of the dimensions of an AR-10. But if there were a supply of lowers at a decent cost, I would look into making some uppers to fit.

I am however lookng for somewhere I can buy blueprints of AR rifles. I have seen really nice large blueprints, so I know they are out there. If you know of some, let me know.

Barrel Length?

I like the concept, especially using the AR lower without having to take the gun apart to load. But I am curious about the barrel length. I would prefer something in ~30-36" with some type of carry handle.

wow.
That is a really neat lookin' heater.
But I'm going to have to agree with Cris on this one, I would like to see it with a longer barrel.

Hm...maybe a series of bolt-actions uppers, in various calibers and configurations, to fit the basic AR lower?

.300 Winmag
.450 Ashhurst
.505 Gibbs
etc...

I'd love to have a DG rifle on an AR, if the upper was a repeater, and the lower could take the recoil!

Cool looking piece.

$1530?????????????????????????????????????????????? THATS IT?????????? I just got back from a gunshow and checked out an itty bitty Grizzly that cost over $2000. What makes the Feret different from the Grizzly and Barrets? I don't know much about the 50BMG except its probable going to be the next gun I get. You have a Potential buyer here. I need one for the next Pennsylvania TFL Shoot in September.

Cool!

David,

That is an awesome weapon. I am really interested in one and have some questions.

1. (already asked) How much velocity is lost with the 18" barrel as compaired with barrels in the 30" range?

2. Do you charge more for the left handed version?

3. I noticed in the pictures on your site that there was not a safety selector installed. Is there a reason for this?

4. What type of warranty do you have?

5. How is the upper finished?

6. Is the handguard metal? If so, how hot does it get?

Thanks,

David Crawford

I hope you dont mind me answering the questions from the past few days in one post.

OK, on the barrel length, I choose the 18" due to balance and look. But, the barrel can be changed in a few minutes. I am not opposed to build one with a 30" barrel. Yes, I use Lothar-Walther barrels.

If the Ferret50 does well in the market, I just might have to do Ferrets in other rifle calibers.

Yes I would like a copy of that CAD file.

The low cost is due to the fact that I have low overhead and you supply the lower. Yes, I could get more from them, but I would like to see more people enjoy 50BMG.

I have yet to clock the velocity on this, but from tables I have seen, there might be a loss of 300fps. Lighter projo and some handload work and I think the fps will be in the 2800 range. Ill have to work on it.

Left handed is the same price. On the lower, I just didnt put a safety in. On your lower, just remove the bolt stop, buffer and buffer spring. Then mount a Ferret50. I will post new pics of the next test session with the new lower.

The handguard is metal. Due to the lots-o-holes and mass of the barrel, it gets warm but not hot from normal use. OK, whats normal. I have shot 35 rounds in 5 minutes and the barrel was warm. Mind you that is $50.00 in ammo. Most people won't do that, but you can.

The finish is Parkerized. Zinc on the prototype but production will be manganese.

Anyhow, I hope everyone had a good weekend. Thanks,
Dave

Halffast - since you're a southpaw like myself, consider sticking with the right hand version. The advantage lays in reloading. Your gun hand remains on the grip, helping to keep the gun trained on the target. Your right hand is free to unbolt the weapon, insert a fresh cartridge and close the action. Quite a few right handed shooters are getting left handed bolt guns because of the advantage of shooting from the prone position.

Hey Dave, I'm definitely interested in one with a 30" L.W. bbl. It will be my entry into the 50 cal arena - something my dear Sen. Fineswine and her gun hating buddies wants banned.
