.50AE overpenetration?

Ballistically it seems the .50AE should put to rest all calibet arguments (assuming you can handle the recoil, ccw isn't a concern, ammo price is not a concern, and just about anything else isn't considered). But, would overpentration become a nightmare, or would you just be darn sure the 300 gr. hollow point was going to expand and stop the BG?

Or... are you going to kill the BG AND the neighbors 10 yr. old daughter?

Actually, .50's are surprisingly affordable, under the right circumstances.

I find politely asking the BG's to line up single file is the most economical implementation of the .50 AE. In this case, it can actually be cheaper to shoot .50 then 9mm or some other such cheaper yet underpowered round! Also, the heft of most .50 handguns makes them handy bludgeoning tools in the event you cant afford any more ammo. And throwing it at approaching hottentots will certainly give you time to deploy that backup E-tool.

:D

A .50 isn't for defense. It's for being the envy of all the other guys at the range. It's for fun. It's cause it's cool!

Although the .50AE cartridge looks quite impressive sitting next to, say, a .45ACP round, it's CONSIDERABLY ballistically inferior to either the .454 Casull or .475 Linebaugh.
It does seem to be the most powerful available semiautomatic pistol round. Too bad the only gun chambered for it is the IMI Desert Eagle.

Greetings all, the .50ae was chambered in the now discontiued LAR Grizzley but easily located on dealers shelves. The factory ammo available from Speer is loaded with a 325gn Gold Dot (not famous for over penetration) at about 1350fps. I could think of better choices for defence against two legged critters but there are also worse choices. An experienced shooter can do very respectively in an IDPA match with the LAR and the factory bushing compensator. The handloader can easily run the loads up to compare with the .454. You'll need heaver springs of course, I've run BRP 385s@1650fps with large doses of H-110, the magazines of the LARs tend to dent up from the bullet noses in the heavy loaded .50ae and the .45 Win. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Mag-Safe made a defense load for the 50AE. Can anyone verify this?

hmmm a .50AE as a PDW? I don't think that would go over very well in court...

"..and my second round nearly tore his left arm off...."
