.500/SD

would this make a suitable SD round then?
Sure.
Look at it this way:
.45 ACP 230 grain FMJ cartridges are loaded so that the velocity of the bullet is about 850 fps. The lighter bullets at 185 and 200 grains move at about 1000fps.
The lightest bullet for the .500 S&W is 275 grains. Load that to the velocity that you mentioned and ......
Yeh, it'll work. Maybe too well. That is a lot of cartridge even downloaded.
I wonder what velocity you would get from Trail Boss and one of the heavier bullets.
Pete

I load alot with Trailboss & I'm sure you could get what you were looking for with lighter loads, & still have enough powder in the case for reliable firing...

the gun on the other hand, even in the early "bear kit" snubbie form, is way more gun than I'd want to use

Even in a downloaded weakened form, its more firepower than pretty much any other handgun out there. Assuming you're referring to a SD load against 2 legged creatures, it seems like overkill. Not so sure I would want to HEAR the blast from that.

As a 500 owner, even with lower powered ammo its still pretty tricky when it comes to quick follow up shots.

Not a 100% sure on the powder weight, but I think I have loaded Lee's 440 cast flat point with 10.0gr Unique for something around 700 fps. I think this is a great SD loading, very manageable in the big gun, so that fast shots repeat shots are possible, and a flat, 440gr .50 smacking someone ought to get their attention.

500 S&W

I load 15.0 grs. of unique under the lee boolit. 960fps in my 2-1/2" Raging bulls.
This slug with lube and gas check weights 465 grs. in my alloy.
FUN FUN FUN!:)

As my 4inch .500 has taught me……the follow up shots are very quick. Imagine the muzzle blast and deafening sounds in the middle of the night--adrenaline or not.

Would not rec. the .500 for HD

"...a flat, 440gr .50 smacking someone ought to get their attention."

Spoken like a true gun nut...eh affection ado.:D
