.50 Browning caliber rifles

Has anyone here fired anything in .50 BMG? I'm just curious. The only thing in that caliber I've ever handled is an M2HB machine gun, and that's hardly the same. What's it like having that much powder behind a 761 grain slug? How much to rifles in that caliber cost? How about ammo?

Most of the more comfortable-to-shoot 50s weigh around 30 to 35 pounds. A muzzle-brake helps, but earplugs and hearguards are Good Things.

Barret has a website.

Costs for well made guns run from around a basic $3,500. To really get fully equipped, figure you'll be above five grand.

Depending on type, ammo will run $1.50 to $4.00. You can reload, of course, but it's still not cheap.

Haven't gotten involved, myownself, but it looks like a fun way to turn money into noise.

I think there are a couple of Big 50 shooting clubs with websites...

I've fired a Barret. Quite interesting, to say the least.

A muzzle brake is MANDATORY, or else the gun will injure you.

Smith & Wesson is dead to me.

If you want a Smith & Wesson, buy USED!

A guy at our club has had both the semi-auto Barret and the Bolt version. I fired the bolt version. Kinda like being in a car wreck! Don't know about the cost.

Fired the M82A1 once at a farm. We took turns shooting it until the farmer accidently shot through the top part of the berm(it was too thin at the top) and killed one of his own cows, lol.

Well the steak was good anyway.....

I only put 4 rounds through it, but it was pretty intense to say the least. It basically obliterated the junker we were shooting full of holes(some 80s model Ford POS Sorta looked like a tempo, but it was pretty mutilated by the time I saw it).

Nightcrawler, Northwest arms distributing, builds some really nice 50 BMG rifles for about 2900.00 His number is 1-406-777-1573. Ask for Steve Romans.

You can also checkout State Arms, He also builds 50 BMGs. His Number is 1-608-849-5800

Armalite has the AR-50 for around $2500 I believe.

McMillan makes some beautiful bolt guns for this also. But I think that they are like $4000-5000.

I've also saw a really neat single shot the other day for about $2000. But I can't remember the maker. It looked very simple but robust, I'll see if I can't find out the name on that one.

I've never shot one of these, but it sure looks fun.

I shot a .50 single shot. Don't remember the name but you put the cartridge on the bolt then put the bolt into the rear of the receiver.

Recoil was not at all that bad... of course it had a brake on it.

All in all didn't realy do that much for me... I get more of a rise out of shooting my Shiloh Sharps.

Rifles cost from around 2000 dollars for a single shot BA from Serbu Firearms, to 10950 for the mag-fed Accuracy International bolt action. Of course you can always get the Barrett M82A1 semi-auto for around 7200 dollars.

I have fired the Barrett M82A1 Rifle. It was great fun! The moment I have the winning Powerball numbers, I'm going to get two!

Thank you for all the information. I got the idea when I saw and advertisement for the Grizzly single shot .50bmg in Soldier of Fortune Magazine.

But alas, I am a college student; a mere PAUPER. I cannot afford...*sigh*

At the Tulsa gun show this weekend, the Armalite .50 BMG single shot rifle was offered at "retail" for $2,100, I believe they said. The guy there said he had shot it, and recoil was very mild, due to the uniquely designed muzzle brake Armalite puts on theirs - he compared it to shooting a .30-06, recoil-wise.

Forgive my ignornace, but I have only been really interested in guns since spring of 1999. Before that, my whole life was flying. Then my dad died, I couldn't afford to really fly anymore, and I found I like to shoot. I digrees.

Anyway, exactly how does a muzzle break reduce felt recoil?

The gases from the gun pushing on the break actually puts a forward force on the gun to conteract the rearward force. The muzzle brakes on most 50 BMG are a little different than that on other rifles (which direct more of a downward force on the barrle.)
