.50 BMG?

If I had one, probably the Robar bolt gun or a McMillan. Top it off with either a 16x MK IV, or a Leupold that has been boosted (18-40x).

???

Why would you say that, Zeebra? Prairie dogs are an example. If I can hit a prairie dog at 1000 yards, I could probably hit anything I please. Do you hunt varmints? Have you ever heard of the Fifty Caliber Shooters association and their competitions? Have you ever heard of Skip Talbot and his world record 5 shot 2.60 inch group at, you guessed it, 1000 yards?

So do you expect to be as good as Skip Talbot at his best, when you're out shooting varmints? Furthermore, wasn't that done with milled steel bullets? Plan to make any of those?

Which one do you prefer if you were shooting prairie dogs out to a 1000 yards?

People don't hunt P-dogs at 1000 yds with a scoped .50. At least none that I know. You are welcome to try, but seems a bit pricy for me...

But on to your stated purpose of this rifle...

Figure 1 MOA @ 100 yds translates to a little more than 10" at 1000 yds. Obviously not good enough for prarie rats. Even 1/2 MOA is not good enough for your stated purpose. A regular P-dog is only a few inches across depending upon perspective. Im thinking 1/4 MOA or better and you might have a chance, but it at that point it doesn't matter. You will not aquire a commercial BMG rifle capable of that accuracy at that range using the swill surplus ammo on the market today. Even handloaded...it aint happening. If anybody disagrees, please chime in.

I use to shoot ground squirrels with my Rem 721 30-06 with 110 gr spire point bullets at 200 to 300 yards. Not trying to offend anyone but it did not matter to me that the rifle only shot about 1.5 moa. If I had someplace to shoot prairie dogs at 1000 yards, and the time and money to do it, that sounds like fun to me. MWT

If you are good enough to shoot pdogs @ 1000yds you have missed your calling. Thats better than any Marine or SS Agent I have ever seen. 1/4 MOA @ 100yds is hard enough but 1000.........

I'm not saying you will hit many, just that it would be fun to try. I would be good practice for those 1000 yd elk shots if you had a mind for that type of hunting. MWT

It going to be hard to do at 1000. Now 500 to 600 might be possible but it will be expensive. Then again if you have the money for the equipment go for it. I would find not only an accurate rifle but one with a very good break on it. Otherwise your trip will not be very much fun as you are pounded to mush be the recoil. Is the .50 excessive for ground hogs hell yes but then again so is almost everything over .17 cal anyways so if you have the resources have at it. On a parting note you are definately going to have to reload to reach the accuaracy you want so you might want to think about that also.

Good luck.

Jeezus, ya bunch of twits.

The guy want advice on what .50BMG to buy, for whatever reason.

Discussions of the .50BMG is a little out of the league here. I suggest you go to a .50 cal forum such as BigHammer or .50BMG@yahoogroups.com .

:barf:

Sheesh. The whole idea of this post was getting advice on a .50 BMG rifle for the sole reason of getting an idea about them. Hell, maybe it was just small talk. I am not hunting prairie dogs as a food staple. I have hunted small varmints with .223, .308, and .300 Win. Mag. Guess what, they were all excessive. Maybe I want to shoot monkey terds at 300 yds., supervisors at 250 yds., dung beetles at 100 yds., twinkies, firearm forum participants :) . Who gives a flying explosive horse diarhea what I want it for, exactly? Why do you want the crap you want? Thats not a question for me to care about. It might be a question the F.B.I or the Secret Service might care about, though, I don't know. I was just looking for advice on a highly accurate .50 BMG rifle mostly for sport. Now lets not get angry or sarcastic. Thanks RickD, maybe I will take your advice. Thank you all, for your participation.:D Lets go, I have a Visa Platinum burning a hole in my pocket.
