50 BMG info

I'm getting interested in building a 50BMG rifle, I thought there used to be a 50 forum on here but guess not.
What do any of think of the 50 Holmes plans? I just downloaded them but have had no luck finding a M2 50 cal. machine gun barrel. Any help there would be appreciated.

Try looking on Gun Broker or Auction Arms for a barrel, you might even find a chambered blank. That way all you'll need to do is thread it for a muzzle brake and for the receiver end.

I know there was a big thread on home machinist.com, DIY machinist or something along those lines. Would be a good thread to read up on as the Holmes design isn't for the beginner machinist. Try this link http://www.homegunsmith.com/

If you do go thru with it, post your progress here so everyone can check it out.

50 mg

Thanks for the input 50Shooter, I'll check them out. I'm a retired gunsmith and machinist, have lathe, mill, grinder, saws, etc. so should be able to build one if I can just find the parts. 30 years ago you could buy a pallet of those barrels, not so anymore.

bought the barrel

Thanks 50 shooter, I bought the barrel. What do you consider the optimum barrel length for the big 50??
I have the Holmes plans but it says 'length to suit'.
Dick :)

I've heard that for civilian use 30" is the best trade off, when I do rebarrel mine I think I'm going to go with a 36" barrel. If you go to short you're losing the long range capability of the 50 and to me that why I bought one.

If you absolutly have no ranges past 1000 yards then you can go less then 30" to keep the weight down and make it more portable.

barrel length

I'm going with 30 or 32 inches, most Barrett's are 29" but they also have some models out to 36".
Thanks for all of your help, I appreciate it. Will post progress reports.

Yeah, post your progress as everyone likes to see how others build a rifle if they're planning on doing the same. I have the plans for the Maadi Griffin but finding someone to make the parts is the other hurdle. Simple design, no frills but it will throw lead down range.;)

The biggest problem is as soon as you say firearm they step away as they think your a fed trying to set them up.:(

Yeah, he screwed up big time! To bad as he had a semi design that would've been a good home build or a kit like he used to sell.

I think he's doing life after planning to kill the judge in his case, could've been out already and selling stuff. He was just a little off if you know what I mean. I sent him an email once and got back this rambling email about the government, our rights, black ops...
