Critics call it a super gun; a weapon of war.

They say the only people who really need a .50 calibre anti armor rifle are soldiers and terrorists.

Tuesday, Virginia Congressman Jim Moran introduced legislation to ban future sales of the increasingly popular weapon.

Bruce Leshan's report

How powerful is a 50 calibre armor piercing rifle?

Here's what it did to a 600 pound safe in a Marine Corps training video.

The rounds John Mohammad and Lee Malvo used to terrorize us for 12 days were .223. The .50 calibre is twice that size.

It leaves the barrel of the gun at four times the power of the .223, meaning it can penetrate a half inch of steel at 500 yards.

"This is a clear and present danger and it needs to be banned" says Congressman Jim Moran.

The congressman has more than a dozen co-sponsors on a bill to ban sales of the .50 calibre.

Osama bin Laden's men have already admitted to buying them and Moran fears they'll use them to take out a jetliner or punch a hole in a toxic rail car.

"Now whether they're going to be successful in piercing a rail car carrying hazardous material or shooting a commercial jet, I don't know. I hope they won't. I pray they won't But they're readily available. You can buy these more easily than a handgun", says Moran.

The NRA, and gun rights advocates say Moran is setting up a straw man, and that .50 calibres are almost never used in crimes. They're too big and too heavy.

However, the Branch Davidians did use .50s at Waco.

But Moran's pessimistic the terror connection will convince a majority of his colleagues to change their minds. The ban went no where in the last session.

Is there honestly any chance of passing this legislation?

"No", says Moran.

"There's no chance right now, but there is a chance the American people will catch on", he says.

If Moran somehow succeeds, gun rights advocates say manufacturers have a simple solution, they'll just produce .49 calibre rifles.

VPC alert:

Subject: 50 Cal. Rifle Ban Bill Introduced in U.S. House

Dear Violence Policy Center Action Network Member:

At a Capitol Hill press conference held earlier this week, Representative Jim Moran (D-VA) introduced federal legislation, H.R. 654, to ban 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifles. These anti-materiel guns, used by our troops in Iraq, can destroy aircraft, penetrate armor plating, pierce bulk fuel storage tanks, and penetrate rail cars carrying dangerous chemicals. Yet they are sold with fewer restrictions than handguns. Joining Moran and the Violence Policy Center's Tom Diaz were Representatives Henry Waxman (D-CA), Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), and Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY).

The press conference received coverage nationwide. To see video coverage of thepress conference by the Washington, DC, CBS News affiliate, click here:

We need to build support beyond the 18 original cosponsors we already have.
PLEASE CALL YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS THROUGH THE U.S. CAPITOL SWITCHBOARD AT 202-224-3121 AND URGE YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TO CONSPONSOR H.R. 654!

As you know, last September California became the first state in the nation to ban 50 caliber sniper rifles. The VPC is now working to build on this victory.

Please share this e-mail and urge your friends to contact their Member of
Congress in support of H.R. 654.

Thank you, as always, for your efforts to stop gun violence.
Please call the buffoon Jim Moran and ream him or his flunkie (whoever you get on the phone) out for sponsoring such a useless bill. Don't we as a country have important things to do... like balancing the budget, or perhaps fixing Iraq (even if that means abandoning it or turning it into a parking lot, it's clearly not fixed yet.)

He ought to be voted out at the next possible opportunity (unfortunately a very long 21 months) for failure to due his duty as an elected representative. I assume this won't happen because his constituency is an urban sheeple zone?

However, the Branch Davidians did use .50s at Waco

And the ATF tried to search the property illegally with a search warrent with evidence that was a lie at best. (There where NO full-auto weapons ever found, everything was legal. There where no drugs on the property as well.) Then procedes to destroy all evidence by smashing the veicles around the main bulding and destroying all davidian property they could. They pump potentialy lethal amounts of tear gas into the building. While they may or may not have set the fire. The fact there where numerous media people viewing the assault and no firetrucks anywhere near the property during such a dangerous operation raises serious questions about the intentions of the ATF.

/and people call Fox News biased when sh*t like this gets published by everyone else and they don't jump on the bandwagon?
