50 beowolf

458 SOCOM

Personally I would recommend a 458 SOCOM. You can use standard AR-15 magazines. 12 rounds fit in a 30rd PMAG.

300gr Barnes TAC @ 1,900 fps.
600gr solids

I love my beo. Ive shot one inch groups at a 100 yards with it using both renieer solids and hps. Its dead reliable and hits like a freight train. My wife used it to shoot a 1600 lb water buffalo. My buddy has both the 50 beo and the 450 bushmaster. The bushmaster is easier on the shoulder but doesnt have the pop that the beo has. Why a 50 beo because they dont make a 60 beo.

For the price you could probably find a better protection option like a pistole griped shotgun or handgun as a rifle is very cumbersome for hiking.

dont know ive handloaded every round ive ever shot out of it. As to undhandy to use for bear protection. Mines mounted with a c3 aimpoint and i doubt youd find anything any faster on a target. If an ar with an aimpoint is to slow for protection theres alot of military men in trouble. But then in no hiker im a hunter.

A friend of mine recently got his .50 Beowolf upper back from having something (can't recall just what) added to it. He hasn't shot it yet, and isn't going to until after he replaces the "meat tenderizer" buttplate on his carbine. Says it may be great for locking into the body armor, but he doesn't wear body armor, and doesn't want his flesh chewed up.

Can't say as I blame him.;)

Will give results when he does take it shooting.

And FYI, the ammo ain't even remotely cheap. Cost him the best part of a couple hundred dollars for a couple hundred cases to reload!

mines got a retractable stock and i just put a slip on rubber pad on it. I have no problem with it like that. Without the pad it will beat you up a bit if your wearning just a tshrit.

Is the ammo tough to find?

Of the three "thumper" rounds for the AR (.450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf), the .50Beo is probably going to be the most difficult to find and the most expensive. The .450 Bushmaster, with Hornady and Remington making factory ammo, will likely be the most easily found, but even then it won't be cheap. .458 SOCOM is going to give by far the most versatility for the reloader.

Here's a link to MidwayUSA's page for .50Beo ammo so you can see what's out there and what it costs.
