I was looking at getting into 50 bmg., but there are not alot of makers that I can find. some advice would help alot.

Hello Jordank,

I dont own, and have never shot a 50 BMG however Ive done quite a bit of research on them. As far as purchasing goes, there are a few VERY good manufacturers out there. If money is not a concern, id recommend either Barrett, Accuracy International, or Robar. Accuracy International makes a rifle callled the AW50, its very expensive, but Ive read that its a real tack-driver on the range. The same holds true for Barrett's M82A1 rifle. Barrett actually makes a few different models of their "light fifty" each with a different price tag LOL :) these are the M82A1-a semi-auto, the Model 95 which is a bolt-action created for more accuracy (its also the medium as far as pricetags go), and finally the model 99, which is also a bolt action .50-only it is a single shot version, as opposed to the other two barretts which use magazines(clips).

As far as Robar goes, im not very well informed on their product but im sure they are worth checkin out.

Oh and if you dont want to spend your lifes savings (lol) try checking out Armalite,or LAR mfg.,

GOOD LUCK TO YOU I HOPE THIS OINFO WILL BE USEFUL TO YOU, oh and if you need anything else please email me matthewb@zoominternet.net glad to help out!!!

I would hardly call the M82 a tack driver. It's well built, and accurate enough for it's intended purposes: minute of tank. For real accuracy check out the .50 benchrest rifles, such as the ones at http://users.intercomm.com/agw/ and http://www.mcmfamily.com/ FWIW, I really like the looks and feel of the McMillan tactical .50, but I've never shot it. Also, the Ferret .50, http://ferret50.com/ Is an inexpensive way to make your AR shoot .50 ammo. Also the Watson's, http://www.watsonsweapons.com/ will do this, but it is less convenient.

Try the Barrett Model 99. I have a freind with one and it is a BALL to shoot. Its very well made, very accurate, and Barrett has fantastic customer support. It is also on the cheaper end of the .50 bmg spectrum.

Good Luck

Here are some pictures from the last range session we had with it.

A friend has an Armalite AR 50 which he says is pretty accurate and because of the very good muzzle break, it's very easy on the shoulder. He's shot over 100 rounds of .50 in a day of shooting and hasn't even had a bruise or pain. That's pretty important with a .50.
