.50 Alaskan. Does any one use this caliber or have info on it?

I think it might be a good caliber for a guide gun but I am worried about penetration aspecially on big boned animals like eland.

Will a 45-70 not perform better on penetration.

I hunt distances less than 100yards.

Thanks!!!

I hunt with one....have hunted Africa with both a 50 AK and a 45-70. Hunted TX hog with both and CAN Bear with the 50. My breakdown 45-70 carries better than the larger 50 AK.

However, it's like the comparison of the .338 WinMag vs .375 H&H; .308 vs 30-06; .38 vs .357. In other words, there's nothing the 45-70 can do that the 50 AK won't do a bit better....the only question is whether you need the extra power (don't understand the penetration concern on Eland).

I had 3 Cape Buff on my 45-70 hunt....it worked well. However, if I had it to do over, I think the 50 AK, pushing a 430 grainer at over 2,000 fpm is a better bet.

I guess if you hit them in the eye you might cause them to run off a cliff and die, so yeah, could still be considered lethal. lol
