5.7x28

Ok, what's the deal with this round? As much as FN has touted it, it doesn't seem to be taking off. Is it really .223 balistics on a .22 package, or is it just an expensive .22?

If I remember correctly, the ballistics of this round are very similar to the .22 Mag. Not something I would want to bet my life on, especially if I could get a 9mm or .45 in a similar size package.

It was developed for use in the P90 personal defense weapon. Suppose to be capable of penetrating helmets & body armor at 50 meters without breaking up. The factory ballistics are using a 23gr. FMJ-BT Ball bullet which has a 2790fps MV & 400fpe ME.

After today, its all historical

FN has no intention of making this round available to anyone but LE and military. It is designed purposely to defeat body armour. It would not take much for a handloader to come up with a similar round, though.

Steve: The 23gr SS90 load was dropped a few years back due in part to concerns about locating the projectile's plastic core in x-rays. The replacement 31gr SS190 has a dual core of aluminum and steel, which runs afoul of laws regarding armor-percing projectiles in handgun cartridges. The SS190 runs about 2300fps from the P90 and around 10-15% less out of the Five-seveN pistol.

Say, does anyone have data on the short-lived sabotted sub-caliber 'HV' round for the 5.7x28mm? This died even faster than the SS90.

Look at the .22 Hornet caliber revolver - the RAGING HORNET from Taurus. It can do all that the FN pistol can do - and probably better too.

How many rounds can the pistol hold? Is it like an automag?(sizewise) It really sounds just like a hyped-up BB gun....
