5.7 X 28 for other guns ???

so... I have an FN 5.7 on layaway... & a couple cartridges in hand... it's quite a cool round... I think I'm going to put together a 10" Contender barrel for the cartridge, & will be buying the reloading gear for it as well... interesting cartridge, smaller around than a 32 acp, but bigger around than a 25acp... higher pressure than a 22 Hornet...

it actually looks like it would be a cool round for a few other formats... a short action bolt rifle ???

here's a pic of some of the smaller pistol rounds & where the 5.7 falls in the line up...

( sorry pics aren't uploading tonight )

MAG Wheel man. I was at the range this weekend(yesterday) and I saw a FN 5.7 for the 1st time shot. It is a cool round. I picked up a few pieces of brass and when I was home checked them out. I was thinking the same thing, A T/C bbl maybe a 10" in 5.7? I have been wanting a 22 K Hornet and the 5.7 might fill the bill. It looked like some kind of weird Ackley round and might be even cooler in 17 cal:D. I am going to look at this cartridge a little closer. The FN the guy was shooting looked fun, no recoil but a big blast. Let me know how it shoots when you get it.

It would be hard to find a home for this round in other platforms due to the nature of the round. It would be more difficult IMO to put this round in a revolver than a .223, and it would also be hard to find a semi-auto that could take the size and pressure, and have a bolt face that would also fit. For some reason, when I think of the 5.7 roud and conversions: I immediately think of the .30 Tokarev. If it were possible; I would think it would bring back interest in the CZ52... Hmm, I think a PPsH in 5.7 would be neat.

I'll try that pic again...

after 10 trys... finally...

Yea, The Guy was not a reloader but he had $$. He also had a DE in 50AE and left the brass all over. Same with 40 cal. I got it all up for him though:)

I am going to look into the 5.7 some more. I think it is a cool round and I believe it would be a great round in a Contender. Does anyone know if there are guys wildcatting it to 17 cal?

The pistols are going for about 950 bucks here. Is that a about right on what you are paying up where you live? That seems a little steep for a plastic gun. I'm a glock fan but thats a hefty price for a large, plastic, DAO gun. What about accuracy with them. I know they have veloicty but are the accurate? I am going to check around and see what folks say about them. I may need one also. That will make my wife just as happy as hell. I can hear it now "another gun".

I think you should look a whole lot closer at the ballistic similarities between 5.7 and .22 Mag. For the difference in cost, I lose interest in 5.7. The only advantage the 5.7 has is the large magazine capacity, but again, the cost of ammo, and of the FN pistol just make it all look pretty dumb to me.
There was a time when I was considering buying the Ruger Varmint rifle in .22 Mag. I messed with downloading the .223 a bit, and landed on something like 12 gr. of Blue Dot with the Speer 45 gr. Jet bullet. That chrono'd @ 2,245 fps, and cost 4 cents less per round than .22 Mag. Accuracy was excellent for 200 yd. varminting, and the bullet performed explosively at that speed. Muzzle report was very quiet, from a 26" bbl.
I say the .223 is the best .22 cal platform. Someone is making 33 gr. bullets now that should go well over 4,000 fps with 29 gr. of W748. There are so many .22 cal bullets now, and .223 is a great way to launch them all.

the 5/7, p90 prices have sky rocketed because of obamas win.

ive seen several encore bbls in 5.7, and i beleive alexander arms makes an AR in it.

I went to this site and checked the ballistics on the round. This was out of a 16" upper on an AR platform so it should maxiumize the vel of the round. I think I can do better than that with a K-hornet out of a 14" bbl. I was thinking along the lines of equal vel and not having to deal with Hornet brass which is a pain in the brass. I think I will have to do some more looking before I plunk down 300 bucks on a bbl.

WOW. I just looked on GunBroker and the guns are goning for a K note!

I think you should look a whole lot closer at the ballistic similarities between 5.7 and .22 Mag.

5.7 is a higher pressure round, & bottlenecked cartridge vs a straight walled case, pointed bullet vrs round nose... it should kick the 22 WMR's butt... out of equal length barrels... & it is reloadable

factory rounds are likely optimized for the pistol ??? but it's working pressures are much higher than the Hornet, but the case is much shorter... my 10" - 22 Hornet runs out of steam somewhere between 100 - 150 yards... I haven't played with the 17 K Hornet pictured enough to know for sure, but am hoping for a solid 200 yard cartridge out of a 10" barrel... I'd think the 5.7 could also do it with the proper handload ???

maybe even use a heavier 223 bullet ( since I'll be building a barrel using a left over piece of a faster twist 223 barrel )... baby whisper cartridge ??? likely wouldn't work in the auto, but the single shot offers a few more options on cartridge OAL etc.

BTW... I expect the prices on the guns will rocket up, but I was still able to get mine for $950.00 a couple weeks ago... I plan on using Christmas money for getting it home sooner than later...

BTW #2... I paid $21.00 / 50 rounds at Cabelas this last weekend ( Cabelas isn't nessesarily the cheapest place to buy ammo, but they had it in stock, & I had a $10.00 off coupon I used on the 3 boxes I bought that day )... you do the math... but thats cheaper than I can buy factory 22 Hornet loads...
