my bushmaster carbine is marked 5.56/.223 does that mean the chamber will handle both?
Also im thinking about getting a gas piston upper for my AR, are they better and does anybody have personal experiences with them?

First question: Yes, your Bushie should be able to handle both fine. It should have a NATO (5.56) chamber unless it has a stainless steel barrel, in which case it probably has a SAAMI (.223) chamber.

For your second question, I don't know the answer, but I'm curious, too. :) Unless there are problems with the design and/or manufacturing, the gas piston rifles should have better reliability but possibly less accuracy.
