5.56 tracer round question

So I purchased a few boxes of 5.56 tracer rounds just for some fun. When I opened the box I noticed the discoloration on the brass of quite a few of the rounds. Are these safe to shoot? What is the deal with the the color?

Thanks!

That's called annealing. The factory fire hardens the case neck, nothing to worry about.

Its annealing but its not to harden the case neck, its to soften it and make it less brittle. You don't see it on most factory ammo (its there and has been done on it) because they tumble and polish the brass after annealing. The military brass is not polished. They don't care if its pretty or not.

Keep in mind they are a fire hazard and may cause a lot of things to burn and targets to smolder if they imbed. Be careful.
