5.56 in a SU16?

Hello, I have a Kel Tec SU16 that obviously can use AR15 mags. It is a .223. I read some where that it was safe to use .223 in an AR15/M16, but it wasn't the other way around, 5.56 military ball in a rifle chambered for .223. Can I use military 5.56 ammo safely in my Kel Tec? Thanks in advance, Jason

If it says .223 on the side then it can ONLY shoot .223. If it says 5.56, then it can shoot both the 5.56 and the .223. The reasoning is the 5.56 is a higher pressure round so the 5.56 chamber can handle both but the low pressure .223 chamber cannot handle the higher pressure 5.56 round.

Per the KelTec website...

SU-16A
The SU-16 is a gas operated, semi-loading rifle chambered in 5.56 mm NATO caliber. It is intended to be the perfect everyman's sport and utility rifle. The rifling is 1 turn in 9 inches, right hand twist.

Why do people "Try" and say NO, when the rifle itself and manufacturer says YES? The manufacturer specifically says it's a 5.56. Now; if you're going to say that they have a typo on the website, and the actual rifle doesn't say 5.56 on it, then inform Kel-Tec and let them know that people can mistakenly use 5.56 because of their description on the rifle. But if that isn't the truth, then why are people pretending they know more than the manufacturer. The manufacturer specifically says that it's chambered in 5.56 NATO. So why are we having this discussion???????

OK, I typed my reply before all the facts were in.

The OP was asking if a .223 could chamber and fire, safely, a 5.56 caliber cartridge. I gave my answer based upon that, not what was stamped on the barrel, or on the manufacturer's website.

I will go back and make adjustments to my first post.
