5.56 in .223 Savage Axis II?

Sorry if this has come up before. I couldn't find a prior thread. I know about the differences between the two cartridges. On another forum, one poster claimed that the Savage rifles use a Wylde chamber that would accommodate the 5.56. I couldnt find anything on Savage's website. Any insights?

The Savage Axis/Axis II does not have a 5.56 chamber, it is specifically .223 rem. That being said, most people with bolt action .223's can shoot 5.56 with little trouble, well less trouble than with .223 rem AR's anyway. Shoot at your own risk. If you experience increased effort lifting the bolt or cratered/flattened primers, it's probably not a good idea to keep shooting 5.56 in it.

I have an Axis stainless in .223 rem, and it does have a lengthy throat, which could possibly mean it would shoot 5.56 alright, but I've never tried it. If it were really a Wylde chamber I would think it would say ".223 Wylde" on the barrel. My handloads are with a 69 gr SMK at an OAL of 2.400" and that's 0.010" off the lands.

My guess is most will, some won't safely. There's enough .223 rem floating around in the world you shouldn't need to worry about having to feed it 5.56

Almost 200 rounds of 5.56 through mine.
No problems or signs of high pressure.
.223 seems slightly more accurate in it.

Auto5,

Savage uses a chamber that isn't quite a Wylde, but has a throat long enough to handle heavy for caliber bullets.

Go ahead and test out a few loads in your rifle, if you get signs of pressure then discontinue.

I have posted this before and I will one more time. I know 4 National Guard people that shoot on the NG shooting team. All 4 have been shooting 5.56 in there 223's for years, thousands of rounds. Never a issue or a worry. The pressure difference is there, but in modern day barrels it is insignificate to say the least. Jim567 hit it on the head- 223 will be more accurate.
