5.56 Green tip

Hi all, I was trying to do some research on the new 5.56 green tip ammo, I wanted to compare it to the other ammo they've been using and 308 and what not.
Firstly, I cannot find any ballistics data for it at all, you read how its got more energy less drop higher bc, but I cant find any actual ballistics data for it.

And secondly, while i'm here, how exactly is it better and why is it so much better?

I hate to ask a question about military 5.56 cos it gets beaten to death, but this is a different kinda question so please don't grill me.

Thanks

Looks like the army equivalent of solid copper hollow point with a hard ballistic tip that will be driven back to expand the copper core:rolleyes:.

And it still has the same 3 MOA manufacturing tolerance allowance. It is good combat ammo but definitely not target or hunting ammo.

I have to admit, I have been very pleased with M855 (old, not A1) for CNS head shooting hogs. I get much better than 3 MOA results from it. At wost, I would say it is less than 2.

Unless making CNS head shots beyond 100 yards, it seems more than sufficient accuracy-wise.

To be fair, it is usually much better than 3 MOA and penetration is excellent. When I shoot my civilian M4, I prefer good quality civilian ammo though.

Green tip varies (significantly) from lot to lot -- the complex construction of the bullet with the steel penetrator makes that an inherent problem, and one that results in higher than normal variance even within lots. There's been a waiver in effect for a few years allowing M855 to pass inspections as long as it groups within six MOA due to demand for the ammo downrange.

(And think about that next time you're buying government-seconds XM855 which didn't pass government QC . . .)

And I do test a batch from each lot, as I do with all my ammo, and then tend to shoot that lot until gone.

Speaking of variation...

With that said, I got some wicked XM193 (not 855) ammo that punched holes through a steel target that previously I had used to sight in various rifles and ammo. The target was a MGM silhouette target rated for rifle. Just two days prior I had used it to verify zero with some 62 gr. Privi Partisan ammo. So why it failed with the XM193 is beyond me, but I suspect it is the ammo, not the target.

Now I need a new target.

Oh, and it wasn't mislabeled M855 ammo. We cut one slug apart. No penetrator.
