5.56 Green tip

Hi all, I was trying to do some research on the new 5.56 green tip ammo, I wanted to compare it to the other ammo they've been using and 308 and what not.
Firstly, I cannot find any ballistics data for it at all, you read how its got more energy less drop higher bc, but I cant find any actual ballistics data for it.

And secondly, while i'm here, how exactly is it better and why is it so much better?

I hate to ask a question about military 5.56 cos it gets beaten to death, but this is a different kinda question so please don't grill me.

Thanks

The ammo is M855 if you are talking about the American version. SS102 is sometimes used as well. You should be able to find plenty on it now and avoid "grilling" questions.

It penetrates hog heads very well is why I like it. I understand you have a problem with hogs in New Zealand as well.

The ammo is M855. The bullet itself is called ss109. The ss109 bullet is half steel core and half lead core. The steel core is there to help the round penetrate a little better than the old 55 grain load called the m193. It supposedly also aids in fragmentation upon impact. The ss109 bullet weighs approximately 62 grains and a BC for them can be found pretty easy on the internet. Just find the BC of the 62 grain bullet and plug in your desired muzzle velocity into a Ballistics Calculator and you should be able to get a pretty good idea of what your rifle can make them do.

Green tip ammo (M855) is actually old now. The latest version is M855A1, which is the Army's new "green" round (lead-free). You can spot it easily because the penetrator portion is larger and visible externally on the new ammo.

Ah, point well taken. I was thinking "New Zealand" but he clearly stated the "new green tip ammo."
