495 A-Square?

Hey Guys:
Doc and I are contemplating building a 495 A-Square and he has two High Number Springfield actions. We are wondering how long the magazine box is because the 495 is 3.600 long. Do any of you fellas have a Springfield action you could measure and look and see how much of a job it would be to extend it if necessary?
Thanks.
Harry B.

Harry, I have an 03-A3 Smith-Corona. The magazine box is 3.3 inches long. I suspect a Springfield is about the same. Just looking down from the top, without stripping off the stock, it looks like extending it would be pretty difficult.

Mr. Bonar, Since "Doc" has two high number actions why not get one of his actions, a dummy cartridge and a set of calipers together in the same place?

The 3.6 OAL is not much to go on.

I'm not even thinking about the bolt face, pressures involved etc.

495 A-Square

Sirs:
I cannot explain what has gotten into Doc. and I wanting these cannons!
It started with the A-Square manual, I think.
I've always liked the big-bores - they're more consistently accurate, the recoil isn't bad and they can be used for everything from groundhogs to elephant - (we shoot lots of elephants here in Ohio and Florida) and are fun to build and shoot.
I generally build one for doc and myself - we shoot them, sight them in and then hang them on the rack and read Capsticks books and fantacise that someday we'll go on Safari in Africa!
I build muzzle-loaders and of course the're at least 40 cal. and one is 62 cal. (I haven't even shot it - too busy building guns and fishing.)

Who knows, doc just might call and say, "let's go to Africa" (and we'll go).
Harry B. I think we're all crazy!
