$495.00 AR's from SOG. Whose barrels???

Okay ya'll...
This is the second rifle I've been brave enough to get from a mail order distributor (Through my local FFL dealer of course!)
I want to know if other members who've gotten similar items recently have been this fortunate.
This AR was the "BEST" of a bunch my dealer had ordered...I mean "the nicest looking one". The upper has a sprayed on "Molycoat" looking finish. Oh, well who cares! The lower is an Olympic Arms with dark, dark anodizing. The cool thing about this one is that it is the "TIGHTEST" AR I've ever owned. It is also the shootingest Sonavagun I've ever had. I shot some Hornady Custom 70 gr. in it and the sucker grouped under 3/4" @ 100 (OPEN SIGHTS!!!!):D . I even freaked myself out!!!!!!
I have NO idea who made the barrels for CIA when they put these puppies together.
I had the similar luck with a G3 I got from them!
As I said before...I've had other AR's (2 C...s and 1 B....) and even though their finish might have been all military specs...They really didn't shoot this good. I don't own these anymore! IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF HOW IT IS...Like with everything else in life I'm sure. Please share similar or different oppinions on this matter. I am curious to get a feeling for how fortunate I've really been! Oh...Do ya'll know who might have made the barrels on these????
Thanks and may God bless our great nation!

shooting that well with that long of a bullet make me think its a 1/7 twist colt barrel from a demilled AR

any proof marks?
CMP?

i saw several of these at a gun show with cast DPMS lowers & triangular handguards

Most likely, the barrel is also Oly as they're good shooters. Have a pre-ban Oly SGW that shoots excellent groups. On the barrel, it's marked service match.

Being new to ARs, let me get this straight, is the following correct?

A : Armalite
B : Bushmaster
C : Colt
D : DPMS
E : Former Eagle
F : Fulton
O : Olympic

Thanks for your response everyone.
I did fail to mention that while cleaning
the barrel I decided to "guess-timate" the twist
using the old "Cleaning Rod" trick. I seem to have
obtained 1 in 9" if I remember right. The barrel
has no marks on it whatsoever. The reason why I
wanted to know was because when I get ready to buy
a Flat-Top Upper, I would then know pretty much what to get right off the bat!
On a different note....What scope do ya'll think I should mount on this puppy?
Keep in mind....AR15 was $600
Scope must be less than 1/2 of that!!!
:D :)

MakeMyDay,

Thanks for your info. on this AR. I was wondering what quality and accuracy of this rifle.

Does it have A1 or A2 sights?

Recently I purchased a L1A1 put together by Centruy and can't complain about the quality, accuracy and function. I really like the way it handles but I quess my first pick will always be the Mousegun. From what you said for $500.00 it would be hard to go wrong.

Thanks,

Turk

carry handle ARs work best with either the Colt 4x20 compact carry handle scope

or the foreward mounted Aimpoint with the Red Dot of Death(TM)

Turk:
This AR15 has A2 sights. The receiver is an Oly circa 1997 and it's a forged receiver not cast.
As I had said before, the gun shop I usually deal with started getting these in because of the $495.00 price tag. Mine was about the 4th or 5th he had initially gotten in the month of October. I think ALL the others I saw before mine had DPMS receivers (didn't pay attention to CAST or FORGED. He's supposed to have called in THE LAST ONES from SOG last week!...
And yes....they've been a HOT item for this shop.
From what I saw, it's been hit or miss kinda thing. Not all were beautimous like the one I got. I was there at the right time, I guess! But, yeah...most I saw you can't go wrong for $495.00 + dealer's take.
Thanks.

I would think these are pretty good deals. I'd be happy with a colt barrel, I'm sure there chrome lined. I have'nt seen any around me, most of the AKs and ARs have been bought up at area shops. Some of the shops around me would price these at $800.00 I'm sure, I see SAR1s at $480.00 and yes some people will pay it. I think you guys gotta helluva deal.;)

i doubt a grain make a difference

what i have read is, that the overall length of the projectile is what requires different twist rates to aid in stabilization

DZ,
No keyholing experienced with mine. I do see
how it would be a problem feeding from the
magazine anything larger than 70 grains though.
Well, in my case since I'm pretty sure the Twist
Rate is 1in9, shooting aything larger than 70 gr.
wouldn't be a good idea anyway.
Oh...about the de-milled Colt barrel being a possible barrel on this AR, I'd say not likely.
There is a 12 hole muzzle brake on the barrel and it's kind of difficult to tell if it's chrome plated or not.
I think it's NOT chrome plated.
Thus possibly not a COLT. Also, the barrel O.D.under the hand guards all the way up to the front sight is very FAT! (around .920" to 1"
:D :) )...Don't think COLT service barrels are that thick, for this length under the guards!. Please correct me if this statement is wrong.
Anyway,
Thanks to all for the replies.

Who makes the barrel is pretty much anyone's guess. You might also want to try the guys over at AR15.com to see if you get any answers.

Glad to see you got a good shooter for a great price!

Good Shooting
