475 Wildey- Worth it?

A dealer told me that he could get me one (the Survivor model with 8" barrel) for $1220 plus shipping, tax, background check. I'm sure you all know how much I love the big calibers. Given the price of factory ammo (about $93/50 rounds), that is the only real roadblock. My main question is how do the ballistics of the 475 Wildey Magnum compare to the other big bores like the 454 Casull, the Linebaughs, the 480 Ruger, and the 50 AE? Is the Wildey any more or less powerful?

GI, I hate it when people do this, but I can't answer your question on ballistics. I would however like to share with you what my net research on the Wildey indicates - that as guns go, they are very fragile creatures. It seemed like it was almost a right of passage for a Wildey owner to have at least some parts breakage, and the owners weren't all that enamored of the expensive and curt factory service they received either. Additionally, the ergonomics/shootability of the Wildey promote a somewhat painful experience due to sharp edges they leave on the gun (which is unbelievable for the asking price).

I wanted one too but wound up getting a Desert Eagle .50, which was a much better long-term investment in my opinion. I cannot say enough good things about it, and would never want anything less robust for firing magnum cartridges semi-automatically. The ergonomics aren't too great but you get used to them and the gun is not painful to me at all. Most importantly, my DE's accuracy is amazing.

As far as caliber goes, .50 isn't the most powerful, but if you can't get the job done with the .50 you probably should just have a rifle anyway.

I handled one last year. Nice big gun, with a couple detractors. The trigger was real heavy, and the sights were crooked, and the ammo was pretty expensive.
I think worth is in the eye of the beholder.
