.460 Rowland conversion

If any of you read the latest issue of Shooting Times, you read an article about the .460 Rowland conversions for standard 1911's. I have a few questions. First of all, does anyone gfeel that this conversion would beat up a standard 1911 slide and frame? I sure would hate to do that. Also, Has anyone heard whether it will work with a 4" barrelled gun?

I bought a Republic Arms Patriot 45 acp new for $180 for the purpose of converting it to 460 Rowland loads.[great case support]

To make a long story short, I had to make a 42 pound triple recoil spring assembly. I put 14.5 gr of AA#5 behind a 185gr FMJ in Federal brass. The recoil of the little 20 ounce gun is so heavy that I started leaning forward when shooting.

Half the men tested cannot pull back a 42 pound slide force. I have to change hands and grip the slide with my right hand.

If you want a small, light concealed carry for Grizzly bears, this will do.

My gunsmith friend built one last year... The 32 lb. recoil spring is a major concern though. Real pain in the butt to disassemble for cleaning... :D

I don't know the specifics but including all parts and the the donor gun price, the total came to $1500....

I think I will stick with my .45 Super Ruger...

I ran to the bathroom to get my refrence material (Shooting Times) for moer info. The system uses a 24 lb recoil spring, and a compensated barrel. The conversion you guys are talking about sounds permament, but this conversion is reversible, so that you can still have your .45 acp, but also shoot your .460 Rowland. I guess Steve Clark is selling them...maybe I'll ask him about these questions, too. Anyone with comments? I'd love to have this capability with my Springfield!

Johnny Rowland has a web site that lays out all the particulars of the .460 Rowland. Don't have a URL handy but you should be able to turn it up in any search engine.

The main drawback for this conversion is that you are limited to 250 grain slugs. Thats plenty for deer, but not enough for anything with teeth.

I saw this compensated Upper conversion for sale as well... I had the same concerns why beat up my stainless ODI/Viking lower with a
conversion.. maybe a charles daly lower??

Is this really a caliber on par with a 44 mag?
