460 handgun scope

Should get my 460 ENcore barrel in the mail sometime next week.
Comes with a weaver base.
Realize I must use steel rings, but not sure about what scopes.

I think a 2x fixed should be fine. Need decent glass with nice reflective coating, but most any scope out there has those things now it seems.
My LGS said as far as they know the only ones that will reliably hold up to 460 is just under $400 and more.

My other two scopes are Cabela's brand, or more accurately re-brand. I am happy with both.

Back in the day, Leupold & Burris were the go to brands for handgun scopes. With any luck the one you picked will continue the Burris quality reputation.

I use alot of chinese scopes on my pistols and like them, but I wouldn't recommend any for a 460. If you can afford the coin either Burris or Leupy will work. I know folks that are running Weavers on theirs but I don't know how hard they are pushing it.

I would go with more magnification then 2x, to get the full potential out of your 460. The Burris 1.5-4x looks good. I would order from Midway. My 44mag broke a red dot that was supposed to handle a 44mag. Midway replaced it no questions asked. I will always order from Midway. I just saw the T/C scope post. That looks even better and T/C has a good policy.

I have a S&W 460 PC that I picked up used a few years ago. When I purchased it it had a Nikon Monarch 2.5x8 scope with Warn rings. Shooting factory ammo such as 200gn Hornady's wasn't a problem at all. When I started reloading for it is when the problems began. First the scope would shift in the rings so I tried lapping them but it still continued. The fix was to use a third ring. This secured the scope but the shock from the recoil knocked the reticle loose. Nikon replaced the scope for free of charge and assured me that their scopes were designed to withstand the recoil from the .460. Well needless to say the new replacement scope only lasted about 20 shots and the same thing happened again. I went with a Burris 3-9x32 EER scope. Its a bit pricy but so far it seems to be holding up.

Your 460 has vicious recoil and I don't think that cheaper scopes will hold up. Purchase one of the old stand by's: a Leupold or a Burris. Anchor it with four rings.

I shoot a 30 Harrett with a 2X7 scope on it. At 2X I can hit soda cans at 100 yards. At 7X, because of its small field of view, it takes a long time to find the can. However, after finding it I can pinpoint my shots. In the hunting fields no deer is going to stand around for several minutes waiting for you to shoot it while you find it in the reticle

I think that in a handgun less is more practical then more.

Here is what I got for mine. I got it for the cost of shipping due to the rewards system on my capital 1 card

I wish I could tell you more, but its still factory sealed, I never got around to mounting it....its funny how your life and interests change....quickly

I still may mount it but I never bought the mount or rings. I read that warne rings (and possibly a warne mount) should be used. Anyone have any info on that?

I have a 2X Burris on my Redhawk, and it has taken 300 gr Barnes loads a lot better than me. A Burris would probably be the best bet for a .460.

Burris or Leupold 2x no question. Give up a bit of magnification for added field of view. Double ring mount similar to JD Jones TSOB. Believe Redfield makes one also. Have Leupolds on a 375 JDJ and 45-70 Contender. No problems at all. Locktite the crap out of the screws.

after bouncing this around in my head for the last month or so and hoping I will stumble on another option, I think I have settled on the IHMSC sight I linked from EABCO. I won't be bale to shoot the gun to ranges I need a scope yet anyways, so I can wait until later to ad on and I like to have sights on guns even if I have a scope.

Buck I took last year was close enough I switched to irons when I took it.

Last chance to suggest an outside the box solution

My 15 in barrel wears a Leupold base rings and 4X scope. The Weaver base & rings wouldn't take the recoil of full house loads.

On my T/C Contender 444 Marlin I put a Bushnell Trophy Elite 3200 in 2x7x32 with 4 rings. Held up to every thing I could run thru it as I reload. Scope was around $300 and worked great.

Crazy, and I'm not suggesting this at all, but I had a NcStar 2X on my 444marlin Contender. Managed to stretch the frame with that barrel but never tore up the scope. Before that it was on a mauser scout mount that was notorious for eating scopes. I still have it around here somewhere, maybe I should buy a 460 S&W just to see if that will kill it.

Actually the pressure liimits for the .460 mag is 65,000psi
The older contenders are not suited for those kinds of pressure and even the Encore is questionable with this cartridge.
