45LC vs 44 Mag

I learned to shoot on a ruger standard 22 which I still have, a single shot 12 gauge, a 22 hornett and a ruger blackhawk in 45 Long Colt. I dont know how many rounds I fired through the RBH over the years but a lot. I never had any trouble at all with recoil. how much of a difference is there between the recoil of a 45 colt and a 44 magnum in a super blackhawk with 5 1/2" Barrel?

It depends.

Have you been shooting factory "cowboy" loads in your .45 Colt? If so, they're pretty weak loads, simply to keep from rapidly dissassembling many of the older guns chambered for that round. *A modern .45 Colt can be loaded hotter than a .44 Magnum, but if you've been shooting factory .45's, the .44 is going to be a healthy handful. That ISN'T a bad thing.

*as always, some exceptions apply.

we always shot factory loads and recently corbon 300 grain jsp 45 colt/mag +P. my dad hadnt shot it in a while and he felt the corbon loads more than I did. they kicked a bit more but no where near pain/discomfort levels

The huge selection of ammo today, makes this a difficult question to answer. There are .45 colt loads out there from mild (cowboy action) to wild (buffalo Bore) and there are reduced .44 mag loads, and .44 special loads mild, to .44 mag wild (buffalo bore again). But If you are used to standard velocity .45 colt ammo, the full power .44 mag will be a very big step up in recoil and muzzle blast. If you go to a .44 mag, I would suggest that you start with Buffalo Bore's heavy .44 special load first. After shooting this ammo, you can decide if you still want to go higher and get a taste. of the full power stuff. If you reload....then you can assemble handloads that meet your comfort level. If you shoot factory loads only, there is still a wide spectrum of loads out there for the .44special/mag. I'm sure you could find some factory ammo that would meet your needs.

thanks. I figured the 44 special would be a better load to start with than a high end 44 mag load but wasnt sure if it would really be that big of a difference. I think even before I try the 44 special loads I will be purchasing a 357 mag/38 special. reason is I finally got my wife interested in guns. took a bit of work and she's still not to the point where she says "lets stop by the gun store when we go past and see what they have in stock" but shes into them enough to make me happy. once she got accurate she loves shooting my ruger 22 pistol. and shes not dead on but getting really accurate and comfortable with my glock 22. she wants to step it up and have a ccw 38 special. after that its my turn for a new gun!! cant afford to buy 2 or more at one time, sadly. but I will be getting a 44 eventually.
