45LC deer ammo....preference?

May be getting my hands on one of those H&R 410/45lc single shots from a buddy who bought and never uses (stealing it for the $ it's gonna run me).

My quesiton is for those who have a 45LC in a rifle set up, what factory loads would you say would be best for deer or what loads have you seen success with? I won't handload this round as it simply wouldn't be worth it, as I would never make enough for it to be worth it.

I can not believe there is no reaction to this post. Let someone ask about a center fire .22 and there is pages of posts in reply. Factory ammo in .45 Long Colt for deer? You would probably be better off using .410 slugs if you are not going to load your own.

I think that most any of the standard (not downloaded for cowboy action use) lswc loads would work well. I would not use the readily available lrn loads.

However, my first preference among factory loads would be either some of the new hornaday's with the red tipped bullet, or something loaded with the 250 grain Speer gdhp. If you handload, the possibilities are endless.

Another option would be some of the new .45 colt personal defense loads being marketed for the judge and similar revolvers. I would think these should perform well on deer sized game.

If your willing to do what it takes to get a broadside shot inside of ~70 yards the 250gr Speer golddot is a good choice.

A 250 grain bullet going 850 fps got the job done for years. The 45 long colt only became a feeble pea shooter after the 44 mag came out.

The fact is, I think most standard load 45 LC will do the job.

I like flat point ammo rather than the roundnose.

Stick with broadside shots and naturally get as close as you can. But that goes for any hunting situation.

Best wishes.

does the H&R handle +P loads? The 45 colt can be loaded into 44 mag territory energies and has a bigger bullet to boot.

I'd say handloading is the way to go buuuuut.... if you dont, Corbon also makes hot loads for pretty much any revolver cartridge out there.

I can get close to 1300fps out of a 275gr RNFP (probably more but I don't want to push it) bullet from a 7.5 inch barrel. Out of a long barrel with a slower powder, I bet you can do better.

I like a 255 LSWC handload, but you're not handloading. Any good 250gr. and up HP, JSP, LSWC will do the job just fine. Oh, a .410 slug should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as the .45 Colt. The .45 is a very formidable round and the .410 slug is an inaccurate armadillo round.

IMO, the Hornady Leverevolution 250 grain factory loads are the best value. I use them on South Texas Hogs all the time and it does its job well. Dead right there every time. These bullets with the special tip expand incredibly.

As previously stated, the .45LC will equal the performance of the .44 mag with the advantage of a bigger bullet if you handload.

I am geared up to handload for the .45LC now and am definitely sticking with the Horandy 250 grn bullets. Anyone care to share their loading recipe's for the .45LC to save me some load development time?
