Not to be overlooked - - -
Several years ago, there were a lot of South American (Brazillian? Argentine?) navy contract S&W 1917-type revolvers re-imported. They mostly had rather muddy finishes, even those that hadn't been reblued. They were reasonably priced, and, from all reports, the majority were pretty tight and shot well.
As with so many import items that were inexpensive (not
cheap, mind you) eight or ten years ago, these have gone up in price. They can still be had at gun shows for a good deal less than a good GI M1917, and FAR less than other S&W Hand Ejector revolvers. An already-refinished example can be customized without ruining collector's value, and they are a good, solid, strong, large frame .45 ACP revolver, without being overly heavy. I like 'em!
This was just another option. I am in full agreement with the above suggestions. The older model, blue, 1955 S&W (M25) set the standard, long ago. For an all around sidearm, the Ruger BKH convertible is an outstanding value. A 1911 magazine is an excellent loading accessory for these SA revolvers, too.
Best,
Johnny
