I am intersted in a get a revolver in 45acp but dont no were to start? I have been looking at SW 625 and it seems like thats the only one. The new tarus tracker is coming out but its only 5 shot.
I would like a 6 shot.

Colt or S&W 1917's. The ORIGINAL .45 ACP revolvers.

Oldies but goodies. Available for about 1/2 the price of a new Smith, usually. You'll have to hunt one down.

S&W 1955 Target's are another choice. Cost more, though. Direct precursor to the mighty 625.

Converted Webleys are around. My two seem to work great. Cost is comparable to the 1917's.

A Dan Wesson Model 450, I think? I know DW makes one. New, not cheap. Like a new Smith. IF you can find one.

There's the whole single-action thing, also, but that might not be what you're after.

Tauruses are rumored to be out in the fall. Medium-frame big-bores are very cool, five-shot notwithstanding. I'm gettin' one, provided they get sold in my stupid state.

A few years ago I displayed my bias against everything Smith & Wesson by purchasing a Model 1917 Brazilian Contract.

Fun gun, and today I reaffirm my bias against everything Smith & Wesson by taking it shooting with me this afternoon.

You can still find these guns for not a lot of money in relatively decent shape.

I just gotta say,

What ever you do, do not even consider an old Smith & Wesson. If you see something that even faintly resembles and old Sith & Wesson that is for sale, run, do not walk, to the nearest computer and let us know.

The older S&W 45acp revolvers, things like the Model 25, the Brazilian Export Model of 1937, the Military or Civilian Model 1917s are exceedingly dangerous to your wallet. Unless you have been fully immunized and know both the Greater and Lessor Signs, they must be avoided.

You have been warned. we can take No Responsibilty for what happens.

I drool every time I see a 1917 Colt or SW.

Colt= Big, ugly, wierd grip frame that begs for a grip filler. SW= not so big or quite as ugly, much better grip.

So which do I have?

A Colt, of course, if you miss the BG you can use the Colt as a "war club", gotta be at least as effective as hitting someone with a frying pan.:p

I know you're probably not interested, but have you considered a .45 Colt DA revolver? The ballistics are comparable with the .45 ACP, and they can be redone to accept moon clips (via Clark Custom Guns). Plus, you can shoot the rounds without a moon clip, if desired. Just a thought.

Don't laugh-

Hey, I had one of those Colt U.S. Army 1917 .45 caliber
revolver's; complete with gold tone hammer and trigger
and stag grip's.:D  :)

Years ago I bought a S&W 1917 for $90 in a pawn shop. I am shocked at what they bring now. Are they rare? I thought about a half-million of them were made. Did they all get tossed overboard on the way home from Europe?

Later I bought a M25 (mid 1970s). A very fine machine, but it was like shooting a pop gun. The .45 ACP in that big, heavy revolver generates so little noice and recoil that I wasn't sure if anything had happened when I pulled the trigger. I prefer a little more excitement in my pistol shooting. Sold it and bought a .44 Magnum M29.

I bought a new S&W 625-6, which is what I believe to be S&W's latest rendition. I find the quality excellent. It's too much gun for the caliber, but if you plan to shoot hot loaded .45 auto-rims the weight would be a welcome factor.

My 625 Mountain Gun in .45 acp is definitely a keeper. Accurate with most loads, and a good, smooth action.

Have you considered single action? If so the Ruger Blackhawk .45 convertible (two cylinders)will shoot 45 Colt or 45 ACP (without those worrisome moon clips). Also you can shoot hot loads in the 45 Colt caliber Blackhawk.
