.458 Win Mag update

A while ago, I got a new Ruger #1 Tropical in .458.
I mentioned the brutality of the recoil with the full house 510 gr loads in another post.
Yesterday, I took it out and shot it again, having received a "clean" bill of mental health from the physician that examined me after I received a brain concussion from shooting it last time.

Anyway, I now knew what to expect, and I was a lot more relaxed when I shot it.
This helped a LOT!

I was able to hit with it, shooting 1 gallon jugs at 50 yards.

Shooting from a more relaxed position helped absorb the recoil a lot better than clenching the life out of the weapon. I also received no brain damage, because the recoil was not all distributed to my head due to me death gripping the weapon.

Advice from a new devotee to the .458:
Relax. Shoot it like a regular rifle. the recoil is easier to absorb, and you can hit with it.
I wish somebody would have told me that before, but honestly, I probably wouldn't have believed them.
But now I know.
Hey, it's only recoil. :D

(I still intend to install a cheek pad though)

MadDog,

I took my .458 #1H and had it rechambered to .460 Weatherby. 500 gr. bullet at 2,600 fps really thumps you. I also learned that you need to relax when shooting the big stuff. Trying to resist the recoil doesn't work.

I tell ya what, I have a little warm up session with mine these days. I have a 300 grain bullet over 35 grains of 2400. What a great load. Just purrrrs. I shoot a few of those, and then am ready for the 500's. It really helps. When I am benching...it is a very accurate gun!

hehehe want recoil try shooting a 10ga 1.75 oz slug out of a 7lb single barrel Shotgun. That will kick a weee bit more than a 458, prob even more than a 460weatherby....

The Magnaport idea had already occurred to me. It would assist in recoil reduction, without spoiling the beautiful lines of the #1.
I think that I will pursue it.
