A while ago, I got a new Ruger #1 Tropical in .458.
I mentioned the brutality of the recoil with the full house 510 gr loads in another post.
Yesterday, I took it out and shot it again, having received a "clean" bill of mental health from the physician that examined me after I received a brain concussion from shooting it last time.
Anyway, I now knew what to expect, and I was a lot more relaxed when I shot it.
This helped a LOT!
I was able to hit with it, shooting 1 gallon jugs at 50 yards.
Shooting from a more relaxed position helped absorb the recoil a lot better than clenching the life out of the weapon. I also received no brain damage, because the recoil was not all distributed to my head due to me death gripping the weapon.
Advice from a new devotee to the .458:
Relax. Shoot it like a regular rifle. the recoil is easier to absorb, and you can hit with it.
I wish somebody would have told me that before, but honestly, I probably wouldn't have believed them.
But now I know.
Hey, it's only recoil.
(I still intend to install a cheek pad though)
