Will a 458 socom upper drop into a Smith&Wesson M&P lower? I guess my question should be is the M&P mil spec....i'm thinking of picking up a 458 for fun and destroying some hogs

Yes, 458 Socom will work with a standard lower, it was also designed to single stack using standard 223 mags. For the upper it needs a dedicated barrel, bolt, modified barrel extension, and a larger ejection port in the upper.

i like the idea that the 458 will single stack in regular mags....i'm thinking about a rockriver 458 upper....i guess i'm just wanting a new toy...so i gotta get all the details ....HA....

Yes it will fit on your .223/5.56 lower, you can get 10rds in a 30rd .223 mag, great for taking deer out to 500yds. Ammo is a little expensive, but a lot of fun.

Not to hijack the thread, but the distance issue raises the question that I've always had -- what do people buy the 458 socom for, exactly? Aside from the "because I wanted one" argument, what do the ballistics do that other rounds don't do just as well or better? What hunting application is it best suited for? Just askin...

458 socom would be great for the shorter distances i shoot....it does nothing a 45/70, 308, 30-06 et al couldn't handle.....but...well...i just want something different and it is semi-auto which adds a little icing to the cake (since i like the 45-70 and there is no semi-auto in that caliber)
