What good is a 457 round ball? Is this a ball for a patched 50 cal?

I didnt even know I had a round ball mould. I wonder where it came from.
 
Oh Yes !! .45 ROA

These are typically used in the Ruger Old Armys. Do you have one of them hanging around. I too have two sets of molds and plenty of balls. ... ;)
Keep in mind that you are going to shave a ring when loading ... ;)

Used in the Ruger Old Army. But some muzzle loading rifles use them also. Keep in mind, older rifles and some custom made barrels do not have exactly the same bore size as some factory made ones. I use patched .457s in a Douglas barrel on a target ml rifle that is nominally called a .45 cal. Tight fit but accurate.
 
Really! I do not have a ROA but I am somewhat familiar with them and have always liked them. Those are pushing 500 bucks by now I bet.

Where do these ROA fit in? What is its inherent goodness? Strength? Copy of a famous (which one) gun? Popular for CAS? I know their cool factor is high.

Pushing works, especially after Ruger no longer makes them. I am told that there are still dealers who have some of them on hand. However, Don't know how you break them loose. .... ;)

Don't care for "This Vs. That" posts will sill say that these are tops and as far as looks; They are all that and some. Others will be here soon, to address that. .... ;)

I have bought guns because I had brass and dies before. It's not a stretch to buy one because I have a mould for it! Why did they stop making them?

Ya know, time means little to old retired farts like me but I'd say it was about two years ago, or so. The reason I say that is because they put out the 5-1/2 inch models, I passed on a SS one for $450.00 and been kicking myself in the butt, ever since. That makes it easier to remember. .... ;)

I remember when they were 250 and nobody hardly wanted one. I should of got one then. Oh well, I have the mould, This one has to go to the bottom of the list.

I just got a gun off the list and heres one going back on. It never ends.:D
 
.457 balls are good for reduced/gallery loads in 45-70 or other .45 rifles. Also good for slugging 45 cal pistols, for slugging rifles simply place it on an anvil and give it a good whack w/ a hammer.

I had a fellow give me a .45-70 bullet and I was so intrigued by it that I bought a .45-70 rifle, and a bunch more bullets too!

I have a 45-70 round that I picked up somewhere that probably explains my interest in the caliber. We had a thread about buying rifles/handguns to go with a set of dies awhile back, a thread about buying a firearm to go with a mould could be interesting as well, Beagle333.
 
.457 Gallery loads? Sounds like a good way to lead up my Guide Gun. Besides I have a 155 gr Collarbutton mould for that. How much are the .457 RB's weigh?
 
Not only is my .457 RB mold good for the ROA but it's handy for my Uberti 1860 and my Uberti 3rd model Dragoon. My pietta's are the only ones I have that I use the .454 mold.
 
Are they hand cast .454s? The ones I use drop at .4525 and don't shave a ring, but fit good. I just grease over mine and have never had a problem. If you get cast .457s, they should be .4555 and leave a big ring. Swaged .457s will probably be hard to load.
 
Next time I cast I'm going to cast some of these 457 RBs. If I can make gallery loads and not lead up my gun then I can use it. My collarbutton boolits seem to be slightly finicky to being seated just so or they're flyers.

In using the RBs for gallery loads, do I seat them flush or 1/2 way? Do you use a wad over the powder? Can these be made into a safe duplex load? (two RBs)
