.455 vs .45 ACP

Just out of curiousity, how does the .455 used in the Webleys compare to the .45 ACP out of a revolver? I would think they would be similiar but I have no personal experience with the .455.

I load for my Webley MkVI ... using Fiocchi brass and 230 grain lead cast RN's. I do tho load pretty light ... something around 3.3 of red dot I think .. but don't quote me, I haven't checked my records.

I think the .455 could get up there with .45acp but maybe only as loaded in old days with the ''manstopper'' wadcutters. Funny ... I have never yet remembered to chrono for my Webley .. guessing tho - and going by recoil etc .... I'd doubt my homeloads would make better than 650fps.

Someone may hopefully have some data on factory ammo .. Fiocchi I think does sell complete rounds.

The .45 ACP is much more powerful than the .455 as-issued. .45 drove a 230 grain bullet at about 850 fps MV giving 405 FP of ME. According to Cartridges of the Word, the .455 Mk.II drive a 265 grainer at a pokey 600 fps w/220 FP of ME.

I doubt you could go much faster with the .455 in a Webley, although a S&W Hand Ejector should take loads approaching .45 ACP power without any problem.

I have a 1915 Mark V in .455 and a 1927 marked MK VI in .45acp. I enjoy shooting the 265 grain .455 load. I cronograhed some old military jacketed .455 ball loads years ago at 650 from the 4" barrel of my MKV . I just bought a bunch of Fiocchi ,455 ammo , for $20 a box, so I will chrono some soon, they seem pretty mellow and I'd imagine they were down around 600fps. I , unfortunately, never slaughtered an animal with a .455 yet, but that is gonna change here in a couple months. I know well what .45acp does,I'm interested to see if there is a difference! :D
