454 cylinder expansion

I gather you're using factory ammo, which should fire well within standard operating pressures. I've heard about this problem with 454 Casull in the Super Redhawk. The "official" explanation offered is that the cylinder steel is quite elastic - more than usual. When the round is fired, the cylinder expands (stretches) allowing the case to expand with it. Hence, when the cylinder rebounds back to normal size, it clamps onto the less elastic case causing sticking. My 454 Super Redhawk doesn't have this problem - in fact, I fire hot reloads (i.e., 32.5 grs. of WW296 behind a 300 gr. Nosler partition) without any sticking at all. This is a wrist-breaking load (~1700 fps), which I plan to reduce.

This happens with my Ruger SRH with hot loads. I was a bit concerned until I read exactly what Ackley Improved Used posted previously in an article by Brian Pearce that was published in Handloader Magazine. I did a little more research on the internet and found an article written by one of the metalurgists that Ruger went to for development of the special alloy S.S. they used for these guns. Reading that info eased my mind. The proof testing they did was very reassuring.

Ruger made a cylinder from Custom 465 stainless, then fired 50 proof rounds from each of six chambers (total 300 rounds) at 92,000 psi. This is about 50 percent higher stress than that produced under actual firing conditions. The designers repeated this firing cycle numerous times and noted that the cylinder successfully withstood all of the proof firing without a scratch or sign of defect anywhere

Thats impressive...i guess i dont have to worry about hot loads all to much then...thanks that was really imformative...appreciate the info...
