454 accuracy with .45 Colt ammo

I am thinking of getting the Ruger Super Redhawk chambered in 454 Casull.

I am wondering if accuracy will suffer when shooting .45 Colt ammo, due to the twist rate of the rifling being made for the higher velocity 454 ammo. Is this a problem or is it similar to the situation with .357 magnum revolvers when shooting .38 special ammo?

Anyone out there shoot 454 and .45 Colt in the same revolver? How does it work out as far as accuracy?

Thanks!! :D

I actually have only shot 1 box of 50 through my Super Redhawk. They were the Winchester Cowboy loads, 250gr lead bullets. These loads worked pretty well, accuracy was fine at 35 yards with alot less recoil than full house .454 loads. My only complaint was they leaded everything up, I'd love to find some jacketed 45 Colt loads. Also, if you want to shoot .454 Casull loads that dont recoil too bad try the 250gr Winchester hollow points. They are more like a hot 44 Mag load.

I love my Super Redhawk, I got the 9.5" model.

One other thing, after you shoot 45 Colts through a .454 Casull or for that matter 38 Specials from a .357 Mag you always want to clean the cylinder really well. The shorter round will live a ring of sorts and after alot of shots sometimes the longer magnum case wont chamber properly...I've even heard of people shooting 45 Colts then going to a .454 load without cleaning the cylinder and ending up with a permanant ring in the cylinder. My thing is if I shoot the 45 Colts, I do that last or dont even take .454 loads with me.

The accuracy was great..the range im sure would make a difference, Big Yac is right in the fact you will want to clean your cylinder after 45 LC before using 454 loads...but accuracy is fine...and recoil on my 7 1/2" is really mild with the 45 LC and 454 are quite tolerable IMO..

Thanks, guys - sounds like some good news. I was concerned about the accuracy of the .45 Colt ammo due to the rifling rate. Ruger cuts a 1 in 24" R/H rate in the 454 Super Redhawk and a 1 in 16" R/H rate in the Super Blackhawk in .45 Colt - big difference.

I doubt that I will shoot much 454 ammo, but it is good to have that as an option, since the 454 is a cut above the .44 mag power-wise.
