.45 Witness recoil spring...

alter ego

Greetings,

Picked up a .45 EAA full size Witness thursday. So far so good. However I did notice that it ejects spent casing quite a bit farther than the usual 6-9 feet and that several of the casings I examined had a streak the primer instead of a nice dot. This leads me to believe that the slide is not staying locked long enough.
I find it interesting that EAA uses the same 14 pound recoil spring for all calibers from 9mm to .45. Wolf has 16, 18,20 and 22 pound springs. Any ideas of where I should start? I don't want to order the whole kit unless I have to. Midway sells just the 18 and 20 pounders. I was going to order stuff from them any way so I was wondering if I should try one or just order both.
I am I correct in thinking that I need the heaviest spring that will allow normal functioning?

regards, David

PS anybody know any websites devoted to the Witness (besides the EAA and Tanfoglio sites) that might have tips and tricks? I found one page that had some good info on magazines but that was it.

I would thank 16 or 18 pounds will do it for standard loads. To heavy of a spring the gun would not eject or cycle right.

Thanks guys. The springs I'm ordering are wolff springs. I've had good luck with them in the past. However I've found it's best to order them from either Midway or Brownells because when you order from Wolff they will hit you with a really nasty shipping charge for a $8 spring.

reagrds,
David

I too own a Tanfoglio (Witness) .45, full-size. The shells do eject powerfully. I intend on putting the 18 lb. recoil spring on mine shortly.

I have not found many sites dedicated to or including Tanfoglio pistols. I can think of 2 but will have to research to get their URL's. Maybe those of us who enjoy these guns can start a website dedicated to them??

I love my .45 and once it is broken in, intend on using it as my primary ccw pistol. There are no pistols out there that fit my hand like this large frame does. I tried the CZ97, but it was just too bulky to feel comfortable. I have put 500 rounds through it so far with no malfunctions of any kind. For a stock pistol it sure has been more reliable than my Colt 1991A1 was when I got it.

EAA-Corp is ok for information, but I have had better customer service responses emailing Tanfoglio in Italy.

Hope this helps. Mike

Mike,

Thanks for your reply.

I've actually thought of throwing up a forum for the Witness. I used to run one for my other hobby, working on guitar amps but it was kind of overwhelmed by some of the bigger boards.

I'm still thinking about it.

regards,
David
