.45 Win Mag ammo

I just acquired about 1000 rds of 230gr FMJ in .45 Win Mag, but I don't have a gun that'll shoot it. Is any one looking for some ammo?

I've got more than I can shoot (hah...what a joke), but I gotta tell ya...it's a wonderful cartridge and IMO it is worth getting a gun for, at least if you reload. Is it Winchester factory ammo, just curious?

Yes it is all factory Winchester ammo. I'm thinking about getting one but I don't know much about the cartridge, I did see a Ruger blackhawk, and a Thompson center that looked interesting.

I have 3, but unfortunately since retirement, I am no longer able to buy large quantities of anything...:o

The proper place would be in the BuySellTRade forums, BUT...

Welcome to TFL Rrussel250!

As Bongo mentioned it is an interesting round, and one that doesn't get the "respect" of older, more famous magnums, but has the performance, and then some.

Winchester loaded a 230gr FMJ, and a 260gr Partition Gold JHP, there might be others I don't know about, which do you have?

The 230gr sizzles at 1500+ from a 5" or longer barrel and I have loading data for a 250gr to do 1400fps from a 5" barrel. Also data (one load) for a 300gr hitting 1200fps from a 5" and several loads showing that slug at 1150fps, again from a 5" Grizzly.

My Grizzle is a 6", my Wildey is 7.5" and I have a 14" Contender barrel for the .45Win mag.

The round is capable of meeting and beating many standard .44 Mag loads in equal length barrels.

Boy do I wish I had a .45magnum
But those grips are awful large for a guy who wears a size 9 glove. I can't shoot a glock 20 worth a darn, probably not anything automatic with any more recoil

I wear a size 9 glove and manage ok. True the grips are large, but not unmanageably so, for me. The grip of my Grizzly "locks" into my hand quite well, probably due to the rubber grips. My Wildey, on the other hand, have a "fatter" (more round) grip profile, and being wood do not "lock" into my hand as well.

Even if the grip is on the large size for comfort, there's no reason that should stop you from shooting it well, PROVIDED you forget about combat style speed shooting. Unless its in the script for the movie hero, 5 aimed shots in 3 seconds (or whatever your combat standards are) it ain't gonna happen with a .45 Magnum. Not for us mere mortals, anyway.

The big magnum autos are repeaters, not machinepistols. ;)

Might seem that way, but you really want a grippy handful when you pull the trigger. Yes, if you're looking at the Grizzly Win Mag, it's definitely a big handful. Does it feel different? Yes. I have little fat hands, and would I say it's comfortable? Yup. I'd say it feels good. Time after time.

I had a glock 20 when I was about 16-17 for a few months. Starting out (with low powered CCI blazer and American Eagle ammo) I would literally get 2' groups at 10yds for 10 shots. After shooting about 400rds I managed to get that group down to 1' or so, but because of the cost of ammo and availability and also lack of desired accuracy, I got rid of the beastly glock. The grip was just too big. I'm a small guy and that was before I started working, my grip wasn't all that strong, and the gun would twist and torque in my hand under firing, because I couldn't get enough of a grip on it. I would like to fire a big Magnum automatic one day. Even a .44 desert eagle. I like automatics better than revolvers. Most powerful handgun I have shot is a 10mm/.357mag

There's just no getting around a "large" grip when using an autopistol shooting a round that is about 1.6" long.

There is, however a difference in how you design the grip frame & magazine, and how it feels in the hand. I have Auto Mags, a Widley, Desert Eagle, and LAR Grizzly, all shooting .44 or .45 cal rounds that are about the same length.

The size, and shape of the grips (and the balance of the guns) are different enough that each one feels completely different in my hands.

Also have a Coonan .357. width is noticeably less, but the back to front "reach" is about the same.

The 10mm doesn't even come close.
