45 Variety

I have those high name brands but I like variety. What .45's have impressed you? I was looking at the Taurus 945, Astra A80, CZ97, Witness. Any feedback on these or any other .45s. I would mainly consider these guns plinkers. Just need new toy.

In the traditional 1911A1 style, I recommend the Kimber Custom/Classic full-sized in stainless. Springfield's "fully loaded" series is also excellent.

Among the non-1911A1s in .45 ACP, I believe the Sig P-220 is outstanding, although Glocks, H&K USPs, and Ruger P97s have also received very favorable comments.

What's impressed me in .45?

Ruger P97 for those who like DAs, ditto SIG's P220 full size and P245 compact.

Wilson Combat's KZ-75 for 1911 lovers.

Republic Patriot for concealed carry on a budget.

Have not yet seen a Glock 36 but it seems like a good idea.

For plinking, I'd go witht the Ruger. Well made, feeds anything, ugly, rugged and inexpensive.

The best weapon for self defense is the one you have when the need arises!

I just purch the HK USP compact and like it so far, but its kinda pricey for a plinker. The Ruger looks to be a top buy in this catagory. Like mentioned above, consider a 1911!

I only own three 1911 type pistols, two are colt and the third is a SS Mitchell.
Does anyone else here own a Mitchell?
My understanding is that Mitchell only made 500 of these pistols before the Feds closed his Santa Ana, CA plant.
I've only fired a couple hundred rounds thru mine but it had functioned flawlessly.
Any comments on the Mitchell?

Have Sig, Glock, and 1911's. USP, Beretta, great but not to my liking. I wanted to see what's on the lower end. Hey didn't Mitchell make that Omega(double action) .45?

I would say that for a new toy, plinker the ruger p-97 would be perfect, My DA/Sa S&W CS45 serves my well for carry and if I AM in a plinkling mood is fun to bang around rocks at the gravel pit.

I'm most impressed by my S&W Model 1917 Brazilian contract. :)

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

My favorite (and only) .45 is a Para-Ord P13.45. I highly recommend anything from PO (except the P10 as I hear it has feeding problems). If you like double action, try the new LDA. Sure, it's another 1911, but that double stack mag is one heck of a bonus!

I have a Glock 30, A Beretta 8045, and two custom Colt's. A stainless Government Model and a Lightweight Officers ACP.

1911 owner myself, but:

If I was looking to spend not to much for a hard core plinker I would probably get the Ruger P97, it seems to be a very impressive gun, especially for the price.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the CZ 97, I've never heard any negative comments about them, and if you like the CZ 75 I would give this one a hard look. I've never shot one, only handled them, but I was very impressed and would like to eventuallly add one to my collection.

No experience with the Taurus, Astra, or the EAA.

The Taurus you mentioned should be OK, but the one I had gave me nasty hammer bite. Cycle the slide several times with a firm firing grip to make sure it won't happen to you. Otherwise, I can and do wholeheartedly recommend the Ruger P97. The Sig P220 would be my second choice in that role.

While I surely do miss my P12.45, my current .45's (*&* 625-4 and Glock 30) suit me just fine...
