Just picked up a Springfield .45 Super, Long Slide V-16 Comp.

Does anyone here shoot .45 Super?

Are there any commercial loads?

Thanks

I've shot a bunch of .400 Cor-Bon and .40 Super through my G21. Have shot .400 Cor-Bon through my compensated Gold Cup. The point is, I'm pretty experienced with hi-vel loads. I shot some .45 Super through a friend's G21, equipped with the same threaded, compensated Accu-Match barrel as my compensated barrels, except, of course, his is .45 ACP. We had a great deal of difficulty getting the .45 Super to feed. The slide speed was such that rounds weren't being picked up from the mag. We tried several different mags. We're using a 22# spring, but will go to a 24#. Also, will try stronger mag springs.

Your Springfield has all those bugs worked out. The .45 Super will no doubt work fine in your pistol. We were shooting 230gr. Golden Sabers (which I hate, due to the "driving band") and 230gr. Hornady XTP's. The Hornady's are easier to load and are probably more effective for hunting. I was using 14 gr. of AA #7.

I forgot my ear protection on one shot, having been distracted by the jams. Won't ever let that happen again!!

I shoot .45 Super in my modified Ruger P90. I find the commercial ammo too expensive for my taste ($40 for 50) and the only current manufacturer is Texas Ammo. I much prefer to load my own...

I'm about to shoot 45 Super in my P14Limited.

I have a variety of recoil springs from #32 to #24. I have an Evolution Gun Works squared off firing pin stop on the way, in hopes that it will delay the slides rearward travel enough to allow me to use the #28 or lighter recoil spring. The #32 spring from Wolffe really batters the hell out of the gun on it's foward travel.

Anybody know where I can get a heavier mainspring? What is standard factory mainspring weight, 23lbs? I wonder if I could obtain a heavier one 25-28lbs, to further slow the rearward slide travel, and allow the use of a lighter recoil spring.

The ramped ParaOrdnance barrel is fully supported, so the only tweaking I should have to do is with springs.

I sure wish ammo was cheaper!!!!

Desert Dog, tell us about your modified P-90. I always thought that gun would be a good candidate for .45 Super. How many rounds did you fire through it, how does the frame look so far?

The only modifications I have done are a homemade buffer made out of 1/16" teflon sheeting and a Wolff spring. I have shot about 150 rounds so far and there is no visible damage whatsoever on the frame or the slide. The Ruger just loves it. It ejects the spent cases about 6'-8'. I have only shot 34 factory rounds... The rest are reloads. I have one load that will make one ragged hole at 30', using 230 FMJ's. They chrono around 1150 FPS...
