45 Schofield fit in Repro S&W New Mdl-3 chamber for 45 Colt

FOR DRIFTWOOD/Re Uberti's New Model-3 in 45 Colt:

Would the slight larger diameter of the 45 Schofield rim (0.520") vs that of the Colt (0.512'')
still be able to seat/fit in the recesses of the 45 Colt extractor?

(Using the slightly shorter Schofield cases would enable using some of the classic Keith-style
LSWCs and still crimp into the crimp groove, instead of up into the body's cleaning band --
and use less powder too ;))

Howdy

Sorry, I cannot give you a definitive answer to that as I do not own any Uberti Topbreaks. My New Model Number Three is an original, chambered for 44 Russian. I have an original Schofield, obviously chambered for the 45 Schofield round.

Come to think of it, I seem to recall shooting with at least one shooter who was running Schofield ammo in his Uberti made Schofield chambered for 45 Colt. Uberti Schofields are pretty rare around here, I don't recall any other shooters with them.

I do shoot Schofields in my Colts and Rugers. I grabbed a bunch of Schofield brass, and measured the rims. Most are running between .518 and .520 in diameter. I did not find any over .520 in diameter in my quick survey. I buy all my Schofield brass from Starline.

I can tell you that one of my Vaqueros did not like to accept 45 Schofield brass in one chamber only. This is because of the different shape of the ratchet teeth on the Vaquero cylinder. A little bit of work with a file took care of that. There is less clearance for the rims on the Vaquero than on a Colt, as this photo demonstrates.

My gut feeling is, yes, any Uberti Top Break chambered for 45 Colt will accept the slightly larger Schofield rims, but I have no personal experience with it.

I'm going to roll the dice then, and order some UltraMax 45 Schofield (Starline brass if nothing else).
If it fits, I'll pick up some separate Schofield Cowboy dies as I'd hate to reset all the 45 Colt stuff
already in [constant] use.

:D

Actual fit -- gnat's eyebrow -- but they fit.

(Incidentally, exactly the same clearance/fit in a New Vaquero cylinder)

Well, the originals fit both the S&W and the Colt SAA, as the so-called .45 Schofield was the only ammunition issued by the U.S. Army from 1874 to the end of the single action era. The .45 Colt was not made by the government in that period and not issued.

I have a 3rd gen Colt 45 with short 4 & 3/4" bbl. and it kicks some with 45 Colt ammo but not so with 45 Schofield ammo.

I do like shooting 45 Colt out of 7 & 1/2" barrels though.
